I'm halfway between Betty's Cobblers (oo-err missus!) and Franchise FC.

The local team use to be Wolverton Town, playing in various lower leagues, the last being the South Midlands League, before they folded in the 90's. Their ground boasted the oldest surviving wooden grandstand, which was taken down when Wolverton Park was converted into a luxury residential development, but has been restored and re-erected by popular demand, overlooking what used to be the pitch and is now a landscaped park.

I remember the Hornets playing a pre-season friendly there in the 1980's. Anyone else go to that?

Can you get a season ticket to go and sit in the stand? It sounds very odd indeed. ;)

Hemel play Sutton in the FA Cup 4th qualifying round tomorrow so 'orns fans with nothing to do could do worse than support the Tudors who are flying - 9 wins from 11 this year.
Leverstock Green are struggling and next Saturday have free admission to all, so after the Leicester early KO, get in your firey chariot and go to Pancake Lane. They really need your support.

So who are the local teams in Cologne, Mex, Norway, France, Bandit Country and whichever Highland League team Bolton selects....?????

I was born in sutton, so i'll probably support them

...The forbidding brick cliff behind the stand is a part of the once mighty Wolverton railway works...

The "Railway Works" at Wolverton is still very much alive and in business today, thanks to a takeover by a German company Knorr-Bremse after the original owners went into administration. However, it is much reduced from its halcyon days under the London & North Western Railway, the London Midland & Scottish Railway and British Rail.

Getting off topic, sorry, but. Yes Vic, you're quite right and some of my friends still have jobs. But back in the day it really was the works. They used to say 'if Derby, Crewe or Swindon can't do it, send it to Wolverton, they'll be able to.'
Sadly, Wolverton has suffered like many single industry towns.
