I'd been giving some thought to running a competition slightly different to what we have had before - I indicated as such some weeks ago, but warned that it would be October before I could do anything regularly due to my other hobby - my racing dogs
What I'm hoping to create is a league table of forumites giving each player a listing, or rank - the object of course - being the forum's Number One until defeated. Think of it as being like boxing or tennis where players/fighters are ranked according to who they have beaten.
This would be done using a Challenge system, whereby a player can issue a challenge to the player immediately above him in the rankings.
I'll illustrate with some examples:
Week 2 results
1. Ron
2. Stick
3. ROTO
4. Red
5. Oddy
6. Steve-o
7. Brough
8. Reebs
Each week there will be challengers and defenders - challenges are only available UPWARDS starting with the last place, every second position. Therefore in the above table, I would be challenging Brough for 7th place, while he will be defending it. Likewise Steve would be challenging Oddy, Red v ROTO and Stick v Ron.
A challenge will consist of the challenger selecting a horse from the FOURTH Channel Four race on Saturday afternoon and advising his selection on the forum, along with the staking method - win or ew (challenger gets to nominate first) I'll assume win stake unless ew is stipulated. Results decided by highest return to a 2 point stake. Defender cannot nominate the same horse as the challenger, and in the event of a draw, positions remain unchanged.
If there are an odd number of players in the league at any one time, then clearly the numero uno cannot be challenged - perks of being the current king!
Week 3 results
1. Stick
2. Ron
3. ROTO
4. Red
5. Steve-o
6. Oddy
7. Brough
8. Reebs
In the above table you can see that Stick has knocked Ron off top slot, ROTO has beaten off Red's challenge, Steve-o has claimed 5th from Oddy and I have failed in my challenge for Brough. If a challenger fails to win, then they have to miss a week before making another challenge, so for the next weeks challenges, Reebs would be excluded, Brough would challenge Oddy, Steve take a crack at Red, ROTO take on Ron, and Stick has a free ride at the top.
Newcomers would enter at the foot of the table, but may not be able to challenge in that week (dependant on numbers)
A defender not making a selection will be assumed a loser and drop a position. A challenger failing to make a challenge will be penalised next week by losing his first pick privelege. Players who go missing for three consecutive weeks will be dropped out completely and if they wish to re-enter will start at the bottom again. All challenges must be made before the first channel four race starts. Defenders can PM me their selection if pressed for time. Any other contingencies will be dealt with on an ad hoc basis.
The opening day's table will be decided by a "select-off" covering 6 races of ew selections which should mean EVERYONE getting enough points to form an opening table.
There is obviously a strategic element involved, additional to selecting your horse. As a challenger faced with a race with a hot favourite, do you select the potential certainty and force the defender to try to get a place at better odds? Or do you go for say the second fav. leaving HIM with a tricky choice? Sneaky is good!
Why the fourth Channel four race? Well, it could be 1, 2, 3 OR 4 as they always show a minimum of 4 races, but on the assumption that in general the better class races are a couple of races in, I went for the fourth. I realise that if they are covering three meetings it could be the second race at a particular venue but that's just the way it will be that day.
The comp will run the same length of time as the League comp, but shouldn't impact on Chan's as it is just one selection here, which can also be used in the other competition. (I have also run this past Ron and Chan, just to be sure I wasn't going to tread on any toes!)
It sounds complex but it really isn't as I will post the following week's challengers on the Monday, along with the Saturday results and new table.
I'm hoping there will be a reasonable take up - there should be, considering how many forumites THINK they are number one
If enough tipsters have the balls to go for this, I envisage Saturday 2nd November as being the day for the creation of the starting table, so I'd like to have an idea if it's a goer or not before then of course.
Just in case this does take off, the 6 qualifying races will be the 2-10, 2-45 and 3-20 from Ascot and the 2-25, 3-00 and 3-35 from Wetherby
Register your interest below please, your selections can wait until next Saturday

Could a mod please sticky this until say Friday to see if it has legs? Cheers!
