Since this thread was about the NFL, I might as well post these:
This was hockey...got a couple of hours ? unbelievable 8 game series....almost the 3rd WW This might be easier ? http://1972summitseries.com/index2.html
Forget 1972 if we want to talk Canada vs Russia then it is all about 1987.
1980 is what comes to mind when going on about USA vs Russia/USSR in Hockey... One of the most iconic moments in sporting history. I like hockey. It's one of the rare sports I was really good at at school, same with basketball.
As a pure outsider looking in, based on video highlights, books and other sources, I believe 1972 was better than 1987 just because of when it was and the international background behind it.
I'm intrigued Macca...how do you know about hockey in '80 . I assume you were not born until well after 1980, and I wasn't aware that ice hockey was on the curriculum at schools in Hull until much later ( if they ever were ?). How did you get to play the game ? Lived somewhere else in your informative years ?
I like hockey, just as I said. Just because it happened in 1980 whereas I arrived in 1995 doesn't mean I can't know about it. I didn't play ICE hockey at school, just hockey (I probably shouldve made the distinction earlier). But I did play Ice Hockey outside of school for about 5 years. One of my mates was a massive fan and he got me into it.
That's why it was called "the Summit". First time a few months earlier, there was a series between Canadian & Russian Teams. The Canucks thought they were invincible - just like the Yanks do/did in baseball. The Canucks got a big surprise...the Ruskies were far fitter, faster & quite honestly more technically talented. The Swedes had the same impact when they started coming over to play pro in North America. 1972 was a sort of redemption...but short lived.
Understand.Good that there are some back home who are not so narrow minded that they avoid appreciating non-Brit centric sports. How are the Stingrays doing these days ?
You say that about non-Brit centric sports, but for the most part I dislike most other foreign sports (except basketball) Currently 6th in Elite League, just recently had a club record winning run and until a couple of games ago had won 7 home games on the bounce. I personally haven't been for a while, i'll have to try some time. Quite hard when your living away and only go back home for City.
I understand why most think American sports are rubbish but I fell in love with them when I was small and went on holiday there, even played Baseball for a number of years. And I think that a little bit of the stubbornness of some over in europe is to blame. If you keep an open mind you'll see merit in all of their sports. It takes time to get used to it and some of the stuff is annoying (all the packaging around it, media, tv adverts etc...)but I don't feel the need to put them in competition with european sports. They're different and I think that's a good thing.
Seeing as you can know so much about ice hockey events. Efore you were born your lack of knowledge on football history is somewhat surprising.
I'm sorry, I must ask, but can you stop having a go with every ****ing post? It's a pretty ****ish way to act. I didn't realise I wasn't allowed to know more about one sport than another. I'm sorry i've upset you, 'dad'. What i'm trying to say is.... **** off and stop criticising me. Capiche?
Colts fan here as well. Decided to go to Leeds to watch this year with a few mates and have a few beers instead of watching it on my todd in my living room. Only ignorant people (or people on the wind up) say that the NFL is a game for wimps just because they see them with pads and helmets on. The amount of diving and faking injuries you see in football surprises me that people on here would say that. Just see how many players tear their cruciate ligaments each week and are out for the season to see that it isn't a game for wimps!
