No names as i wouldnt want one of the usual UK based managers the do the rounds (like big Sam) I think we should look abroad for an up and coming manager with fresh ideas.
All the top clubs have foreign managers, coincidence or is there something in that? Tactically more aware? Not so set on their ways? Know the foreign market better?

On a side note, was thinking about our defence and we really do have a great back four, only problem is, 2 of them are on loan and the other two are struggling to dislodge the current fullbacks!!
In a years time, at most, i would like to see a back four of,
    Emmanuel Yorwerth Clarke Kenlock
Look at that, all in their natural positions, amazing!!

Oh and Dozzel partnering Bish in CM, how bloody refreshing would that be, i think under a different manager we could have a great crop of youngsters come through together but under Mick it wont happen!
Just read his comments on Yorwerth, said he has improved greatly since being here, the problem was he wanted to play a bit too much!! In other words, Mick has taken any skill the lad had and converted it into hoofing!! A ball playing CB with pace is exactly what we want Mick, not another ponderous hoofball merchant ffs!!

Playing devils advocate here Spanish, haven't Brentford tried the following? " I think we should look abroad for an up and coming manager with fresh ideas. "

You're right about the top clubs having foreign managers.

I'm definitely in the same camp as you regarding Yowerth. I honestly thought the lad was very decent vs Man Utd and deserved a chance. Our loss is very much Crawley's gain I hope he has a good month and shows Mick his worth. The other lad at Pompey, Matt Clarke, I honestly am surprised to see him at a League 2 side on loan.

Mick definitely doesn't like the defenders doing much on the ball - forward it goes. Whether people liked the style of play last season Mick dragged a very limited bunch to top 6 and for that he deserves massive plaudits.

HOWEVER - now he has proper wide boys, absolute ballers in Niles/ Fraser / Oar from what I've seen he NEEDS the defence to be a bit more calm and pass to feet more. It has to be this way.

First half vs Bristol City, I thought we played some nice stuff in small batches. Seemed to be positive signs of ball on the deck more. Second half it was bloody awful. Still, we'll have to see how it pans out I guess. Rome wasn't built in a day but come on Mick get them playing a bit more out of defence. Seriously.

You're also right regarding good young crop of players - there appears to be bucket loads of talent coming through. Note we've got Klug back. Coincidence?! The guys a bloody genius. A few need to go on loan and show what they can do, the reserve league is jizz.

I don't think Mick holds a young player back if they are good enough......Mings and Bishop both brought through by Mick....Niles is only 17..

Maybe Mick has a little more infomation about the current 'next big things' and doesn't think they are ready for a regular starting place........a while ago it was 'why isn't Marriot playing' turns out because he wasn't good enough.....

As for playing from the back ..I agree we don't try to pass out from the back even when it seems safe to do so which is frustrating....but it would also be frustrating getting caught messing about at the back....some middle ground would be nice.

I can't see how a managers nationality makes any difference it's like saying 'I want a manager with long hair'
or a 'Manager with a beard'...........although the Beard makes them look cool it doesn't make them better suited to the job.

Ok Weighty, name me a top English manager that is manager of a big club and very successful. Im afraid your argument there kinda falls flat as your comparison with long hair etc is rather foolish. Nationality obviously does make a difference to a certain extent, its how people are brought up within the game, Pep Guardiola was brought up the Spanish way and look how he gets his teams playing, compared to say Mick Mcarfy, yes he has better players but there is nothing to stop MM trying to get players to play on the deck rather than hoofball!!

I'd argue Brentford are generally very successful under their new system, Westy. It's not quite as clear cut as saying they hired a 'left-field', foreign manager and failed. He had to work under a number-crunching, hyper-statistical model, inspired by Moneyball in America, which was both progressive and pretty regimental. It's a system that has delivered success over the past couple of years, notably promotion from League One and a play-off place last season. I think they'll bounce back.

I like the idea of a young, progressive, foreign manager, in theory, but it doesn't guarantee success. I'm not clued up on my Dutch football, but the idea of a young Dutch manager appeals to me, considering our historical ties with the country. However, I don't think McCarthy is doing a bad job, far from it. Yes, the form has been poor recently, but he deserves a bit of patience and faith considering his achievements. Also, and I think I raised this point last season, a change of manager to a more progressive coach, would also require a lot of transition, particularly if we're blooding young talent. Not to mention the financial costs in overhauling a squad that, let's face it, would generally struggle with playing the type of football we'd ideally like to see. Playing the academy players is arguably part of the 'Ipswich Way', but I'd argue patience is in short supply at Portman Road.

So, considering we've spent almost 15 years in this division, I'd argue we should look to sign established players for short-term success and look to get some of that Premier League money. Again, not a guarantee, but we do have a squad that is capable of reaching the top six again. The average age of our squad is 26.3 years, which is the 11th oldest in the division. I think that blend of youth and experience is a good balance. It's clear we could do with some quality in areas, such as a new right-back.

The link where I got the average age stat from, it's interesting reading, particularly our market value which implies we're punching above our weight -http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/championship/startseite/wettbewerb/GB2

I think having a hard working team that plays direct football will get you so far but in the end you need some skill and ability on the ball to push on, its the ability on the ball that we are seriously lacking!!
Oh and weighty, i didnt mean Mick wouldnt give the youngsters a chance, i mean he will get rid of any bloody flair they have, imagine a talented ball playing CM in our team and the ball constantly flying over his head, soul destroying!!

Nugs good points but dont you think that if say someone new came in and said he wants to bring in quite a few youngsters and get them playing together, that people would cut him a little slack. I would love to see, the team below,

    Bart

    Emmanuel Yorwerth Clarke Kenlock
    Oar Bishop Dozzel Fraser
    Sears Didz

I would also understand it may take a few seasons for them to really kick on, remember the likes of Ambrose, Bent, Dyer, Wright etc all in the same side! I also realise that to start off with you would need a few old pros to start so maybe Yorwerth with Berra and Bish with Skuse or a fit Hyam, then change Yorwerth and Bish for Clarke and Dozzel.
Just how i would like to see things but cant see it happening under MM

Spanish I totally agree that British Managers don't often get the opputunity at the so called big jobs........

If you had of been more specific with the Spanish manager playing a Spanish way then I would agree more although it's still not the nationality that makes them it's footballing education...Owen Hargreaves is English but educated in Germany so he would lean towards the German way I presume not that I'm saying I would give him a job...<laugh>....anyway Mick is Irish how much further do you need..........for me it's about the man not the birth certificate ............so long hair shows flamboyance <laugh>.

Oh Roy Hodgson is at a top job and has been successful abroad <cheers>.

lol, Roy Hodgson, really??? World cup???

'If you had of been more specific with the Spanish manager playing a Spanish way then I would agree more although it's still not the nationality that makes them it's footballing education'

Yeah thats kinda of what im saying, English managers dont have the same education as foreign managers, so the nationality does become an issue!! English managers = kick and rush 100 mile an hour football, Continental managers = Take care of the ball football

It's an appealing and ambitious idea, Spanish. I can see the attraction of it. When McCarthy leaves, I'd certainly argue we should go down that kind of route and bring in a younger, more progressive manager. However, I feel there are a few issues about implementing your kind of philosophy at this level.

Firstly, we'd have to lower the prices of tickets. Portman Road isn't a patient ground (I've heard boos when we've drawn games) and for some fans, watching the initial regression from play-off contenders to a likely mid-to-lower mid-table side is going to alienate and upset fans who spend over £600 for a season ticket. Attendances will most likely decrease. After all, we are a club that are in the midst of a prolonged absence from the top flight. Overhauling the squad, changing the philosophy, and focusing on fielding young players will lead to transition, which will lead to inconsistency, and it's going to be seen as a regression in this results-based sport.

Secondly, and this is the main concern for me, we are a selling club. This affects the long-term thinking of fielding young players and building a side. Premier League sides are going to be looking for young players, particularly British players, to fulfil their quotas, and considering our sales of highly-rated young players such as Rhodes, Wickham, Cresswell, Mings et al over the past few years, I seriously doubt that we can keep hold of a strong, settled, young side for more than a year or two.

I don't think the main onus is on the defence to play the ball out from the back(though it would be a start!).What we have been crying out for over the last ?? years is someone in central midfield who is comfortable coming deep for the ball and then able to find a telling pass, there just seems to be no link up play between the defence and forwards.I thought at the start of the season we were progressing but now we seem to be going backwards again.

I don't mind Hodgson tbh I think he is perfect for international football, vast experience in various countries and fairly good tactically and old to accept the long breaks in between games also he has a finite numbers of players to call on money can't solve problems at international level.....IMO

You rate Pep but I think I could do a pretty good job at Barcelona or Bayern, I'd like to see him at a club with limited resources, he might well be a great manager but he pretty much started at the top.

Also do you think that a lot of top teams choose foreign managers because they have very few British players??

Weighty i agree that plenty could do a decent job at Barça but only because Pep turned them around!! They had won nothing for 2 seasons when he took over, his first season in charge he won the treble!! I think he is a grt manager!!

I think a lot of top clubs choose foreign managers because of tactical nous, not because of lack of British players! I could be wrong tho!

Bigal, we could have a midfield of Iniesta Messi Kroos Ronaldo and it still wouldnt help coz the ball would be constantly sailing over their heads!!

Spanish, one of those four would go back and take the ball off our defence and do away with the need for the big boot. The problem is if Skuse(or Douglas) go back for the ball all they do is keep facing their own goal and ricochet it back to the defence rather than turning round looking up and trying to find a forward pass.Christ it's hardly rocket science!
