Curtis hauled off again. I would have played him in a Pitmanesque role!!! He has loads of skill to chisel openings. Put Evans out wide. Lowe also quiet.
As some have alluded to, it is a lack of quality in the final third. If we miss out, so be it. The Championship would crucify this current squad. We are 3 or 4 players short to make at fist of it at that level.
Missing the Brettinator... At least Eurovision is on Thursday so I'll have something to distract myself from this. I bloody hate playoffs.
I feel it is a good experience even it is ends in disappointment as it will stand the club and fans better when faced with another pressure cooker situation. It will be interesting to see who goes, who comes and if Jackett is still the manager next season. If that is the case he will be the longest serving PFC manager since ...King Harry Redknapp!!
To be honest Ides, I don't think Sunderland would fare any better in the Championship if they are lucky enough to go up.
It was our smallest crowd of the season. It was probably still bigger than anybody else's this season
We're there any highlights from a Portsmouth perspective? The shot against the post and probably that's it
Did you watch the match on Sky Sports, Lapras ? They had a former Sunderland player in the studio (Don Goodman who played for them over 25 years ago !), and were somewhat biased towards the home team, to put it mildly. After the match had finished, they merely interviewed Sunderland players - no Pompey players ! I hope that in the second leg, they will balance things up a bit by having an ex-Pompey player or manager in the studio, and perhaps be less biased against us. I'll be at the match on Thursday, and very much hope we will pull things round, especially if both Brett Pitman and Lee Brown are fit to play. Should be a great atmosphere.
I was able to watch the game on tele in Oz. In terms of holding our own I did not think we had a bad first half. We did not create chances but neither did Sunderland. In the second half we dropped off and if any one deserved to win it was Sunderland although not by much. To be honest I thought the sending off was very harsh. I thought the defender got the ball first and directed it away from goal. He bought Evans down after he got the ball but had directed it away from the goal so, had he not tripped Evans , Evans would have been moving away from the goal to retrieve the ball and would not have had a clear shot. I thought Close was again the canary in the coal mine for Pompey. He had a reasonable, 1st half as did Pompey, and a poor 2nd half - as did Pompey. 0-1 down is not an ideal start to the 2nd leg but not impossible either. Selection will be interesting. I thought Viv Solomon-Otabor did enough as a substitute to warrant being a starter for the 2nd leg. Curtis's current form has dropped off a little. However I would only pick him Viv Solomon-Otabor if Pitman starts. Without Pitman and Curtis we would lose two of our three main goal scorers. The Hawkins/ Bogle decision is also interesting. Hawkins did not have a good game but it could be different next time with someone else marking him. Any one going on Thursday who is reading this make sure you shout your self hoarse - unless you are a traveller from Sunderland!
I think we need to improve the squad by 3 or 4 players - promotion or not. If we lose Thursday we will still have had a very very good season. However, much seems to have been achieved this season by guts and determination rather than quality football. I am not sure that those qualities can be sustained for a second season on the trot. To achieve a similar level next year - even in Div 1 - we will need to improve our squad. Not that I am knocking guts and determination!! PUP
