Cristian Rodriguez to seal move to England

Cristian Rodriguez has been linked with a temporary loan move to Sunderland from Atletico Madrid. The 28-year-old is ready to quit the Spanish club for a short term spell in the Premier League.
Uruguayan international Rodriguez had been linked with a permanent move to Italy, with several teams making an enquiry for the player. However, Sunderland coach Gus Poyet is confident that he can use his South American influence to lure the 5 foot 10 winger to the Stadium of Light.

The former Porto man is hoping a successful spell in England will secure him a permanent move to the Premier League.

Is he that fussy? I'd settle for an orangutan if he could play left back!

He's a left winger mate.

Poyet said:
Cebolla (Rodriguez) is a player who with his power, speed and technique would adapt very well to English football and I would love to have him on my team.

There have been and are talks for Sunderland to sign him, but the issue is not easy because Cristian must surely have doors open to him for several clubs in Europe.

His career has been spent at big clubs like Peñarol, Porto, Benfica, PSG and Atletico Madrid, played more than 70 international matches for Uruguay and for me it has all the ingredients you need. We are in negotiations but it will not be easy.

At one point I was hooked and I had packed, and even thought about how many vacation days I could give him. I have hope yet. I talked to him.

I preferred, for a matter of correction, not talk to him until he saw a real possibility with the numbers, and then explain why he was chosen and what was expected of him.

Sunderland will make a shock £5 million move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Cristian Rodriguez, according to The Daily Star.

The Uruguayan helped Les Colchoneros to the La Liga title and Champions League final, losing to local rivals Real.

The Black Cats have already made three signings so far this summer, but manager Gus Poyet has been given funds to strengthen their attack.

Winner

Rodriguez has spent the past two seasons in the Spanish capital since joining from Portuguese side Porto on a free transfer.

He had won three Primeira Liga titles for the Dragoes during his four years there, before adding the Spanish league to his roll of honours at Atleti.

The 28-year-old has won 69 caps for his country, including four at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, where Uruguay reached the first knockout round.

Attacking

Rodriguez, nicknamed ‘the onion’ in his homeland, is not known for his goalscoring ability but rather his dribbling and attacking play down the flanks; an area Sunderland struggle with.

The Black Cats have Adam Johnson as their main man on the right wing, but are missing a consistent forward on the opposite side. If they did bring in the Uruguayan it would be seen as a major coup by the club, and would go some way to ensuring they stay in the Premier League.

Sunderland have been linked with other wingers, including a loan move for Arsenal youngster Serge Gnabry, but Rodriguez would provide the experience needed to keep a side up.

Bench-warmer

While the Uruguayan has spent a lot of time on the Atletico bench, despite playing 20 times for them last season, the Madrid club will be reluctant to let him go easily.

The La Liga champions have already lost star performers Diego Costa and Filipe Luis to Chelsea, with loanee goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also returning to the West London club.

Defenders Miranda and Javi Manquillo have also been linked with moves away from the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Well we shall see <bubbly>
