I used to love Ned Doig like.

Remember his debut at the SOL well....

Loved big Tony me, remember West Ham away in the run to the cup final in '92 (I was only 12, was my 3rd or 4th ever away game...), and someone hits a screamer, Tony's gone early, it looks in, then his trailing arm does a Mr Moyagi 'wash the car' type swooped and pings it over the bar.

Magnifico, hunted high and low on YouTube for this save, one of my most vivid footballing memories.

    Legend.

Tony went on to be a copper didn't he? And isn't he Darlo's goalkeeping coach now?

Tony was number one when I started going to the matches but was injured most of the season so Tim Carter RIP was between the sticks.

I think it was the 88-89 season, can't be sure though might have been 89-90, defo the season Tony was injured though. I was 7 or 8 and my dad built me a seat to slot on the terracing in the fulwell end. We were right behind the goal on the first set of terracing behind the walkway so the view was out of this world with no obstruction at all and Wow! The noise was unbelievable. Hooked in an instant. I remember the Keeper situation well because my dad was on sunderlands books as a teenager, he was a keeper but was looking at lower league football max so gave it up to go down the pits. He wanted me to be a keeper so tried to mould me. I was an Attacking midfielder though and so was never interested in keeping which is just as well, as although i was one of the tallest in my year I stopped growing at 5'10".

Just worked it out. It was the season we were back in the old division 2 after promotion so it was 88-89 season. So you must have started in the promotion season. Smith and Murray's first season at the club?

Yeah, but was only one or 2 games that first season, which I can barely remember!

Was more the next season that it became a regular thing, my dad's a Mag, so my uncle Jeff used to take me, Clock Stand, then as I got older I went Fulwell, then settled on Main Stand Roker Wing & remained there till the end.

Happy days. Mainly due to lower expectations and hopes!

    1st, Jimmy Monty easily.

2nd, Calvin Palmer (LB I think) when he took the goalies shirt after Monty got injured in a game. 1st touch of the ball was saving a penalty. Brilliant.

South African I believe. Only played the one game in goal so obviously not a cult hero as such but I was at the game and its stuck in my mind

This 100%, although I'd give an honorable mentions to Chris Turner; Barry Siddall and Tony Norman who were all canny keepers in my time.
