He doesn't need to though. An attacker can be 30 yards from goal, running onto a ball 10 yards from him and if he's pulled down it's a red card. He doesn't need to have even touched the ball.
Agreed. But also from the pitch side angle it looks like he was trying to get to ball though. It doesn't look like that on the normal camera angle and from the refs angle may have looked like he was just trying to take him out, and so the red was a pretty easy call for him.
