The Saville inquiry into the death of 13 people has cost £195 Million, according to the BBC in 2010. So the figure overall will be far higher. So that equates to £15 Million for each person. Now without attaching a price to life, each murder in the UK costs 1.8M according to the Treasury, source the International Business Times in 2014. So the Northern Ireland deaths cost 13.2M+ pp more. All to bring a 70 something old man to court.
A ****ing mockery, whilst they let all their killers, bombers, kidnapers, rackateers, etc etc go free.
where is @Julian Edelman on this thread? I'd like to hear his views. Also when that politician called the Marines as nothing more than legalised thugs, and they are using NI as nothing more than a training ground
To be fair if you’re going to call out Julian then it’s only fair to call out Saxton. I don’t think Julian actually disrespected the armed forces who served in NI (I could be wrong but I thought he said he disagreed with the approach to dealing with the conflict). Saxton definitely disrespected someone who served in NI. He even called them a coward because he was too arrogant and stupid to admit he was wrong. No idea why that guy is protected, can only assume he’s a mouthpiece.
no mate, julian would understand same as @brb .I;m not doing politics thread stuff. It's just a cheap dig at Jules, he'll know that. don't worry yourself it...As for Pete, pah.
Yeah that is really interesting - thanks for sharing. I think he definitely has a point about the need to tell the truth to these inquiries and it's not hard to think that's the reason that soldier f is being prosecuted. Maybe people would feel more comfortable if he was tried for lying rather than murder.
Downey is a ****ing rat, mate. He was one of the guys who got a 50 grand pay out. He was apparently responsible for the Enniskillen bombing.
@Commachio i took the figure of 5 from media reports when the decision broke but after doing that post i decided knowing our media i thought i had better check it . Having read the conclusions section which lists which soldiers , if known , shot whom i don't think that is correct though with so many incidents you probably need to do a spreadsheet to make sure. As an aside there are no references to murder in the conclusions itself just if in the opinion of the inquiry team the rules of engagement were followed.
But now they seem to be charging him with 2 murder and 4 attempted. By the 4 attempted, i take it they mean he missed?
Back in them days mate i think they used the SLR. If it hits and arm you had a chance, if that thing hit your body, not so much. It was no M16, or an SA80. That was a beast of a gun. Big ****ing thing to carry about,
i assumed they were people he wounded .However on checking the Saville report it appears that there is the possibility it could be 1 of 4 in the case of Wray & McKiney so it appears it is people he shot at but they can't prove who fired the fatal shot though they think it was him. BBC report Soldier F - what we know Soldier F gave evidence anonymously to the Saville Inquiry in 2003 and admitted firing 13 rounds on Bloody Sunday. His assertion that there were "gunmen and bombers killed" was rejected in Lord Saville's report. The Saville Inquiry stated that there was "no doubt" Soldier F had shot father-of-six Paddy Doherty, who was unarmed. Saville also found there was "no doubt" Soldier F had shot an unarmed Bernard McGuigan on Bloody Sunday as he went to the aid of Patrick Doherty, waving a white handkerchief. At the Saville Inquiry, Soldier F admitted he had shot 17-year-old Michael Kelly - but he said that he had only fired at people with bombs or weapons. However, Saville concluded Mr Kelly was unarmed. The Saville Inquiry found that both William McKinney and James Wray could have been shot by Soldier F and three other soldiers. The inquiry report also stated Soldier F had changed his story over the years. Saville report conclusions https://assets.publishing.service.g.../uploads/attachment_data/file/279167/0030.pdf
only on the attempted murder charges anyway as far as i can see the Saville report is the basis of the charges so if you need any more info have a dig thru the link i put in my prev post.
the case sounds a farce (without reading it) So attempted murder of 4 people, when it could be 1 of 4 people? Sounds like a slight flaw to me.
