Shooting an unarmed civilian doesn't make you a 'brave lad' ... there should never be an amnesty for needless brutality ... but I'm not judging this case.. . I'm saying 'if'
The circumstances of this particular individual opening fire ... plain and simple ... was he ordered to? ... did he just panic? ... why did he continue firing? ... I'm not pre-judging ... but neither would I be prepared to absolve him of any and all responsibility... not all soldiers there opened fire on the unarmed civilians ...
There were members of the Provisional IRA on the march as they were acting as security / stewards as normal a bunch of youths broke away from the march near the end & started lobbing bricks , bottles etc at the Paras. The Paras then sent in snatch squads in to the bogside there is then reputed to have been shooting from Official IRA (aka Stickies) members "protecting" the bogside the Paras then went on a "rampage" firing a large number rounds of SLR ammo. The Saville inquiry found unequivocally that the 13 dead were unarmed civilians .The soldier charged was found by Saville to have murdered 5 people. In my opinion the only real point is should the UK armed services members received the same "get out of jail" notifications that both Republican and Loyalist paramilitary members received.
I guess some may say that justice would finally be done but not sure it would to be honest. That would only happen if you looked at every death and decided whether or not it may be murder. You can't just pick out one case. This does look like an attempt to show that the book never closes but it's not necessarily the right target. Given that lots of prisoners were freed under the GFA and a shed load of pardons etc. issued I don't see much value in this at all.
Don't forget about the payments that the murdering bastards received. We should really equal that up and give our soldier 50 grand. Fair is fair.
