I don’t know why now. I doubt there’s ever a convenient time. Why does any case take decades to make it to court? He might be found not guilty.
But for the following decades the IRA showed no mercy. Both sides in fact, but they were most active, and brought it to the mainland, often. Sorry mate, they've even said the IRA were at this so called peaceful march. So if it was peaceful, why were they there?
40 years ago 21 people were killed and 220 people injured, in two bomb attacks in Birmingham, we are stil waiting for those responsible to be brought to justice, despite their names being known. In 1974 a bomb went off in Guildford, killing 5 and injuring at least 50+ But let's not forget the coward bombing in Maidstone, when the barracks was just around the corner. And the bomb that ripped through Deal killing 11 bandsman and injuring at least 20, again no one has ever stood trial for this. I could go on and on and on.... but we want to make one soldier a scapegoat, what about justice for the INNOCENT people that the scum IRA also killed.
They were bound to be there mate, it was a nationalist march, but apart from reports of throwing rocks or bottles they weren't firing on anyone or using explosives etc. Imo the actions of the army was massively disproportionate. At the end of the day 13 people were killed (and many were injured which isn't reported as much btw). I think the acknowledgement by the government a few years back that this was an atrocity was the right move. Having said that, you've also got to bear in mind that a number of IRA were given immunity (I think that's the right term) as part of the Good Friday Agreement iirc. So there is some political element to this. For the sake of parity this should've included the armed forces as well? I don't know Comm it's a difficult one mate. I do feel that there is as much of a responsibility on those who gave the order to open fire (or even more).
Sadly i was sent to see the aftermath of that, we were sent from Jockland to help secure it.. A band ffs.
Honestly no idea but a court martial decided he should have been. Presumably those deciding understood that sort of pressure rather than a random jury of plumbers and milkmen.
I’m not avoiding the question. I answered it honestly. If he didn’t deserve a sentence, why did a court martial give him one?
Why was there and still a public uproar? It's back to the OP, to be seen to be doing the right thing, even though it's bolloxs.
The public are in uproar over all sorts of stuff, justified or not. The public are generally ****ing idiots. People don’t get done for serious crimes so someone (who?) can be seen to be doing the right thing. The easy option would have been to let nothing happen as it hasn’t for decades until all involved were brown bread. You avoided a question by the way.
I will never forget it mate, I knew Deal and had been to the Barracks on several ocassions, had friends down in the area. Just watch a few seconds of this vid, it will give you an example of what the ever so brave IRA blew up a month later...
But **** all for the relatives of the others killed? It's a show trial to make people feel good. Like my first thought on it, a sacrificial lamb.
