There has been some waffle written (in the Racing Post, for example) about the hindrance of a high draw in the Prix Du Jockey Club that is not borne out by the statistics. The statistic that does matter is that since the race was reduced to ten furlongs, only Shamardal has exported it. The race does not have the prestige of the Blue Riband so the better British and Irish horses venture to Epsom. The key form lines here come from Longchamp: Free Port Lux floored Adelaide in the Prix Hocquart over this trip on the same card that saw three of the field clash in the Poule dâEssai des Poulains, where Galiway disappointed (and it is hard to see the trip helping him reverse form with the first two) although there have to be some doubts about the extra distance for winner Karakontie and close runner-up Prestige Vendome. The favourite with the British bookies in Jean-Claude Rougetâs Prince Gibraltar, a facile winner of the Prix Greffuhle with Earnshaw and Nolohay well beaten; but does he have to have the ground very soft? Having got my fingers burned on Lesstalk In Paris in the Pouliches, where Rougetâs unfancied second string obliged, I can see why Pricewise has gone with Gonna Run as well as the Aga Khanâs unexposed Shamkiyr, trained by Alain de Royer Dupre. After his surprise Dante success, The Grey Gatsby may find it a bit harder to dictate in a French-style race and a blanket could have covered the whole field at York making it look suspect form. With ground reservations about the favourite, my inclination is to take a chance that Prestige Vendome will stay and the main danger may turn out to be Freddie Headâs Free Port Lux.
That was impressive by The Grey Gatsby. I did not think that Ryan Moore was going to get the splits having got boxed in on the rails. I was right about a grey winning but it was not the French one. He did not stay, travelled well until the runner-up made his challenge and then stopped like it was shot. I wonder how much stick Gerald Mosse will be getting for his ride on the favourite. Was it just the ground or did he just give it too much to do?
Plenty of stick, last but one turning in and had to weave his way through. Not sure he would have caught the winner even with a straight run though!
True Story could yet echo Workforce's story.. Not Mosse's finest hour, nothing's been coming from far off the pace at Chantilly today.
What a pilot that Moore fella is. Whatever second string Ballydoyle horse he gets the leg over next Saturday will have the right man up that's for sure. Would love him to get the Marvellous ride on Friday in the Oaks to fill me with even more confidence but I suspect I'll have young Joseph doing the steering there...Not quite the same is he?!

The Great Gatsby, didnt see that coming, looks like the French colts might be a bit behind ours this year if thats anything to go by. Something amiss with Free Port Lux I think, he was much handier than I expected early in the race, jockeys maybe worrying about nothing coming from behind in the earlier races, but he has finished miles behind Mr Pommeroy 6th, and Aventador 7th who he accounted for by over 3 lengths pretty easily in the Hocquart, form which should have seen him in the run for the places at least. He had absolutely nothing today and i'll be putting a line through that as there must have been a physical issue.
It will be intresting to see if your right on the colts boris , not seen any racing for a couple of days now with the old chores but will be watching that with intrest when I get 5 .
