I see Henderson has a flat runner in the 13:00 at Southwell. Are these hunt guys moving into flat racing in a decent way, or is it just something that happens from time to time, and do they meet with success?
Good Day Cyc, doing OK thanks. Your trip over the mountains sounded pretty nerve-wracking? Racing-wise, bit unlucky yesterday, nap got beaten a head at 10/1. Just a very small bet so no harm done. Got beaten by Oddy's choice! No excuses, but was very slightly impeded by a couple of fallers mid-race which might have made a difference. Good racing yesterday, some good jumpers on show.
Don't forget to show us all the winners today!
Oh, on Henderson, some of the jump trainers do have a go at the flat now and again, usually with long-distance events. Alan King likes to have a go with stayers, and the NH guys do pick up some nice prizes on the flat now and again.
Going to chance a nap on Big Eared Fran in the beginners chase at Punchestown (2.35). Formerly with David Pipe and won a Grade 3 hurdle at Sandown and rated 137 over the smaller obstacles, he is now with Edward O'Grady in Ireland and has the assistance of Barry Geraghty in the saddle. Although he hasn't run for nearly 1000 days I think he will be ready for this and Barry sounds quietly confident in his blog on ATR:
"I’d be very hopeful of a bold show from BIG EARED FRAN, who British racegoers will remember as a decent novice hurdler a couple of seasons back who finished third for David Pipe in the 2009 conditional jockeys handicap hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. He hasn’t run since April that year but is now with Edward O’Grady, who is certain to have had him well-schooled and fit for his fencing debut in the Ladbrokes Beginners Chase (2.35)."
Obviously the Mullins / Walsh horse warrants respect but he doesn't look on paper to be one of the stables leading lights, a comment which probably also applied to the Gigginstown runner.
Big Eared Fran is 4/1 in the early books and I think that is a fair price for an obviously talented animal.
Feels great to have a day off so will be able to have a punt today. Gutted to see Khan robbed last night - sob stories for Peterson paid off and fighting in his hometown was always going to be hard. Cracking fight though and I do like that Peterson bloke as he came across well in his interview saying he would give a rematch as it was good of Khan to give him a world title fight
RV been grafting mate, ??
loads were asking where you had gone !!!
good to be back but hope the mags not imploding ????? 4-2 at Norwich, never saw it but think you need some defenders in the window
Seems to be a fair bit of money in the first at Hereford for Miss Milbourne - a good 2nd last time out behind Kentford Grey Lady. Makes me think there could be something in it as there are winning ex-pointers from powerful yards up against it.
2.05 Punch RUBI LIGHT (NAP) has conditions in favour today, and should be able to get its own way up front in this small field, dictating the pace. Really think the horse is a classy animal, slightly unfortunate not to win the Ryanair last year on reflection, got them all at it when a late error did for him. Will only be 7 at Cheltenham this season, and I think he'll be a major player in the next two seasons, whichever races he targets.
Also, one short price selection for the Lay King today over at Punchestown was a tricky call:
