Lol, I know we're **** mate, but we ain't that ****ing desperate <laugh>

Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier, 28, would be open to a move to Arsenal after terminating his contract at Tottenham on deadline day. (Sky Sports)
You’ve just signed a basketball player to play there, plus he’s supposedly given AMN assurances that he’ll get his chance, why would you sign him ffs?

This story started the other day from some random on Twatter and the media have picked it up.
They're also printed stories about Arsenal having 17 non-homegrown players at the same time.
Not sure if they can still ship someone out or something?

Man Utd continuing their run of being allowed to ignore the rules.
They didnt really ignore the rules to be fair. The rules state that players cannot swap shirt numbers once the season has started.
Daniel James being sold meant that No.21 was free for Cavani, so he hasnt swapped shirts with anyone, since 21 is now available.
Since he now has 21, 7 is now free for Ronaldo.

Its a slight bending the rules I guess, but it doesnt say a player cannot change his number mid season, only that he cannot take a number occupied by another player which neither player technically did

Nope. Once a player has an assigned number they can't change it:
"Before the commencement of each Season each Club shall allocate a different shirt number to each member of its first team squad.
A Club shall likewise allocate a shirt number to any Player joining its first team squad during the Season.
Save with the prior written consent of the Board shirt numbers shall commence with the number one and shall be allocated consecutively.
While he remains with the Club a Player will retain his shirt number throughout the Season for which it was allocated.
Upon a Player leaving a Club the shirt number allocated to him may be re-allocated."

They've been given an exemption, much like they get on the pitch every week.

I don't get all this fuss over numbers and why you have to even ask for permission, aside from your club manager, what number you wear.

From memory numbers always use to be 1-11 dependent on your playing position. If Ronaldo wants number 7 and that's not a problem for Cavani then I don't see the issue. A lot of fuss over nothing.

Someone hasn’t played football manager….

I don't get why it bothers you so much.

It's a shirt number for **** sake, it's hardly important.
So why have the rule in the first place? Either have it or don't. It either matters or it doesn't.
Don't decide it matters unless you're Man Utd. It's not VAR.

I see from this point on, there will be no need in assigning shirt numbers. All teams should take advantage of this so whenever they make a big signing, they just shove them into an iconic number.

Man U have obviously paid for this privilege

No mate, last gaming stuff I ever done was a on an Atari <whistle>

Well that's a lie actually, when the kids were young and had a mega drive, I had a go on that. Once they had a playstation or whatever else they had, my brain just couldn't concentrate on the things anymore.

The only downside I see to Ronaldo taking number 7 is that fans would have bought Cavani shirts, but the club I believe has already agreed to change it for those supporters that have - so that's sorted that as well.

It’s the principle behind it. They’ve bent the rules, it’s not like Cavani hasn’t played this season, as he did against Wolves wearing said 7 shirt.

I don't really know enough about it to say whether any arguments are valid.

Just me looking in with a neutral aspect on the game - we seem to want rules for every aspect of it, and I'm sure somewhere in there is a reason for allocated numbers.

But in brb world, you get numbers 1-11 as allocated by the club manager on match day, but the powers that be like to over complicate things these days, probably all to do with marketing and money.
