Yes he was, a bit less but not too much. You can't pay another player more than the club captain, that's my point. With Holty gone it open the door to raise the wage limit a little.
you can pay any player whatever amount you like, regardless of who is captain, so holt leaving has no bearing on it other than freeing up around £25k a week for someone else. i think we'll be looking to pay more like £30k a week as top earner next season (just a guess) with the influx of tv money next summer so we can at least compete with the top dutch clubs on wages.
I know what you mean Supers and of course it legally fine and all that but look at what happened at QPR. The balance has to be right, I don't know too many companies that play employees more than the managers........ From what I have heard about Holty, it may not have gone down too well.
i think unless we suddenly paid one player £80k a week whilst everyone else was on £25k a week, then you'd get issues, especially if that top earner didn't pull his weight. this was always the issue at qpr - the top earners didn't really care. by keeping everyone on a similar amount you don't get that issue. players talk about what they earn to each other, they all know what other people at other clubs are on - its unavoidable - but i think if we keep doing what we have been but just raising the bar a bit each season, we'll be fine
Zogean, possibly if we get some league 1 or 2 clubs in a cup, but I can't see much more than that this season unless injuries force our hand, or we're already safe. Good to see some of them going on the training camps though, thats promising and not something I recall from recent years
I think they have a chance with the cup games, but I don't think they have the experience to step up to full premier league games yet. Some of the decision making needs to improve.
The anticipation surrounding Fer, Toivonen and Alderweireld is killing me. I hope we get at least 1. If we got 2 or all of them I would be ecstatic!
There's a link on Twitter, can't do it at the moment. He said he expects us to announce at least one signing from Holland in the next 48 hrs. He said fer is in Norwich at the moment having a look around and will have a medical in the next 24 hrs. He also said they Toby alderweilder could well sign by the end of the week.
I think this is the link, cant listen to it at work but the text below sums it up. If thats true I would be over the moon. I did see a teewt saying Alderwilder has gone back to trainig...... who knows! Link: http://www.talksport.co.uk/radio/ha...wich-set-sign-two-players-dutch-league-201282
As you've often said yourself supers, the strategy is to get the quality when and where you can, rather than buy someone for this or that specific position/role. So the CB question is whether Alderweireld would represent the quality-leap we are looking for, not whether we "need" another CB. Also, there is the point that both Turner and Bassong had medical problems last season, the long-term prognosis on which is unknown to us. That could influence any decision. As regards Ryan Bennett, I do think people need to get away from this "first choice, second choice, third choice" way of looking at it. We need 4 CBs each of whom can be relied upon to come seamlessly into the team, either because of injury or because of the need to rotate players to maintain freshness and/or ensure competition week in week out. Ryan Bennett should be seen as one of the 4 (not to mention the benefit to him of playing with someone with the quality and experience of Alderweireld).
Robbie, I think you have hit the nail on the head with regards to brining in quality when its available if it improves the side. I think for a club like ours this is even more important when we still work to a reasonably tight budget and wage structure. It may not always be possible to recruit the quality we want in specific positions if the players arent avaialble.
