Former Pompey midfielder Theo Widdrington has signed for League One rivals Bristol Rovers.

The ex-academy skipper will link up with the under-23 side at the Memorial Stadium.

Widdrington was released by the Blues last month after boss Kenny Jackett decided not to hand him a new deal. The 19-year-old was training with Brighton & Hove Albion but has now moved to the Pirates. Darrell Clarke regards Widdrington as an talent for the future. The Rovers boss said: 'Theo is an exciting prospect who was released by Portsmouth as they don’t have an under-23 setup. “Our development squad was created to give players a chance to forge their way into the first-team and Theo will get a chance to impress here.' Widdrington penned his first professional Pompey contract in July 2017 after graduating through the club's academy.

Having read a few reports about Widdington in fringe matches (ie friendly reserve games) in the last year or two I imagined he was a player of potential. It is a pity Pompey does not have a set up that allows room for such players and this , admittedly only to a limited extent, negates the benefits of the Academy.
    I wish him luck.

Transfer Gossip: Nottingham Forest reject Pompey's bid for midfielder.

    Ryan Yates

Nottingham Forest have rebuffed a bid for Ryan Yates from Pompey, reports suggest. According to the Daily Mirror, the City Ground outfit have turned down the Blues' offer for the 20 year old 6'3" midfielder. League One rivals Bradford have also reportedly had an approach rejected, while Championship sides Bolton and Rotherham are keen to take him on loan until January. Yates is a product of Forest's academy but has yet to make his debut for the club.

He's had four loan spells away from the City Ground in the past two seasons. Last term, the Lincoln-born midfielder spent the first half of the campaign at Notts County before moving to Scunthorpe in January. Yates featured 18 times for the Iron, including in both legs of Scunthorpe's League One play-off semi-final defeat to Rotherham, and scored once. The former Shrewsbury loanee has two years left on his Forest contract.

Shame to see him depart, but I have read on the Bristol Rovers site that his father Tommy Widdrington is chief scout / head of recruitment at Rovers.

Torquay chase loan deal for Pompey keeper.

Alex Bass is in the frame for a loan switch to Torquay. The Blues are eager to find the young goalkeeper regular first-team football to aid his development. And the National League South club have registered their interest in taking the 20-year-old on an initial six-month deal. Bass is presently with the Pompey squad on tour in Ireland – one of three goalkeepers in attendance. While Craig MacGillivray and Luke McGee battle it out to serve as Kenny Jackett’s number one, the academy graduate is earmarked for a loan spell elsewhere.

It’s a scenario Bass himself is keen on, despite making his Football League debut on the final day of last season. The keeper is aware his Fratton Park first-team opportunities are limited during the forthcoming season – and a loan spell elsewhere would benefit. Torquay are managed by former Pompey head of community Gary Owers, while ex-Blues skipper Martin Kuhl is assistant manager.

They were relegated from the National League last term, although by adding Bass to their squad are hopeful of a swift return. The stopper has made three Pompey first-team appearances since emerging through the ranks. In 2016-17, he spent a lengthy loan spell at Salisbury. The Blues this summer activated a 12-month option on Bass’ contract to retain him, with goalkeeping coach John Keeley having high hopes.

Coventry City who are on the verge of selling ex-Pompey loan striker Marc McNulty to Reading for a fee approaching £1 million, apparently want to sign 21 year old Pompey striker Conor Chaplin as his replacement.

Sad if true, as i've always had a soft spot for young Conor, but he does need first team football, and isn't likely to achieve that at Fratton Park.

If he does go, I hope we receive a minimum fee of say £600,000, with a sell-on fee clause included in the contract by Mark Catlin.

I feel Chaplin's going to be another one of those players who we never saw the best of at Fratton Park, which is a shame because it's always nice to see an academy gruadate make good in the first team but in the end it seems he just doesn't have the place he needs in the squad.

It will be a pity if it happens. I thought he may get more opportunities with Naismith leaving. Definitely requires regular starts at league level so a loan would be ideal.

While Pitman is king at the moment he is not young and will be a year older if we get promoted next year. I know Pitman has previously proved himself in the championship but older players find it harder to lift their game when going up a level.
So while Chaplin has not proved himself at any League level as yet it is not clear if this has been due to lack of opportunity or inability. If he had a successful run in league 1 or 2 - with Portsmouth or on loan - I then think we could say he had more championship potential in the longer term than Pitman.

I also feel, from the little I have seen of him on television, that there is more to his game than goal scoring but he seems to have been judged on a 'he's had a bad game if he doesn't score' basis. I feel the he links better with the mid field than Pitman coming back for the short pass. Pompey play less hoof-ball when he is in the team. This is partially because he lacks physicality as a target but the long balls that go to Pitman and Hawkins rarely produce good moves anyway.

It is unfortunate that teams largely play one up front when away from home and do not want to make substantial changes between home and away games. Not being suited to a one up front role will be a limitation he will take with him wherever he goes.

Being an ex Worthing man myself, I wish him well!

I honestly don't know why we've never loaned him out, and if we sell him completely before at least giving him a chance loaned out somewhere, that would be utter stupidity. But I mean a proper loan. Not a 'you're leaving either way' loan, but a 'go out, get some starts, bang in a few goals and come back better' loan.

Alex Bass has signed a three year contract with Pompey, and joined Torquay on a season long loan. Hope all goes well for him. Very good young prospect.

    Portsmouth's Blue Army
    1 hr ·
Coventry have had a second bid rejected for Connor Chaplin, and it was a substantial increase on their initial £250k opener.
Coventry are confident they can get their man, however, now their interest is in the public domain, other clubs are believed to be interested.
Pompey could well be seeking a replacement before any sales go ahead. This could very well drag out....

TRANSFER GOSSIP: Pinch of salt and all that, it is rumoured Pompey are the unnamed club to have had a bid rejected for Cheltenham Town striker Mo Eisa. Watch this space I guess?

Apparently we are still in the driving seat to sign young defender Anton Walkes from Spurs permanently.

The reason given for the delay, is that Tottenham still have nine first team players out in Russia at the World Cup finals, so need the likes of Anton to give them sufficient players for pre-season training and friendlies, until they all return to the UK.

Pompey have signed Anton Walkes from Tottenham for an undisclosed fee.

The versatile 21-year-old – who spent the second half of last season on loan at Fratton Park – has penned a two-year deal, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months.

Walkes previously featured at both right-back and in midfield, and has been handed the number two shirt.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “He’s somebody we obviously know very well and he had a successful loan spell with us in a number of positions.

“When he got injured towards the end of the season, we missed him greatly and so we’re pleased to bring him back.

“Anton’s still young and has a really big future in the game, so we’re delighted to be able to sign him on a permanent basis.

“I’m looking forward to him rejoining the group and getting some minutes on the pitch at Swindon on Saturday.”

Walkes scored on his Pompey debut in a 2-2 draw against Doncaster after arriving on loan back in January.

He played a total of 12 times as the Blues narrowly missed out on a place in the League One play-offs.

Walkes is a graduate of Tottenham’s academy and made a single senior appearance for the Londoners, while also enjoying a spell on loan with MLS outfit Atlanta United.

Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain will leave Pompey to sign for Notts County.

The midfielder becomes a Magpies player when his Fratton Park contract expires at the end of this month.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “We wish Christian all the best and he’s just about rehabilitated from the injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

“Hopefully he can build on the two years he had here as a professional and have a successful time at Notts County.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain is a graduate of Pompey’s academy, who turned professional in the summer of 2016.

He made one senior appearance in an EFL Trophy defeat at Exeter and has had several spells out on loan, including at Oxford City last season.

Pompey have been linked with a loan move for Middlesbrough FC starlet Marcus Tavernier. The left winger is currently away in Finland with England squad as the Three Lions look to defend their U19 European Champions crown.

19 year old Tavernier has been identified as a possible loan signing by Pompey boss Kenny Jackett as the potential arrival of Sean Longstaff stalled – with Rafa Benitez wanting to keep the Newcastle United youngster in the north-east for the next two weeks.

He intially started out in Newcastle United’s academy but moved over to the Riverside in 2013, joining Middlesbrough’s U-14 side. His brother James Tavernier also started out in the Magpies set-up before heading north of the border and establishing himself as a right-back with Glasgow Rangers.

Tavernier made his international debut in October 2017 – starting for England U19s in a 2-2 draw against Slovakia U19s. He also started on the left wing as the Young Lions beat Turkey 3-2 as they began their defence of their European Championship crown in Finland on Tuesday.

St. Johnstone are delighted to announce the signing of 23-year-old Scottish winger Matty Kennedy on a two-year-deal.

The former Kilmarnock, Everton and Cardiff City man finalised his move to Saints this morning but is not eligible for today's Betfred Cup clash with Montrose. Subject to international clearance, Matty could be involved in Tuesday night's fixture with Falkirk at McDiarmid Park.

Having started his career with Kilmarnock - where he made 14 top flight appearances - he joined English Premier League side Everton, spending the majority of his time out on-loan at Tranmere Rovers and MK Dons, as well as a spell in the Scottish Championship with Hibs.

A permanent move to Cardiff City followed, where he made 18 appearances for the club in the second tier of English football. During his time with Cardiff he also had loan spells at Port Vale, Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth.

What a come down eh ?! Wish him well though <ok>

So Mo Eisa leaves Cheltenham Town who are managed by Gary Johnson, to sign for Bristol City who are managed by his son Lee !

What a coincidence, eh ? Possibly we, Sunderland and Peterborough Utd were all used by Cheltenham to boost the transfer fee, ready for Gary's lad to then step in and sign him !!
