I also get that. But father time is also an interesting point too here. How many 33/34 year old Cm's are performing well in the premier League ?

i think he’s perfectly good for one more year, obviously he needs a multi year deal to make it make sense for him

that said he could do his year, we stay up with him playing his part and he gets paid off and moved on and his payout is so inconsequential in the grand scheme of things

I just don’t think any of the numbers mentioned here are disproportionate or unmanageable

it’s a totally different realm here since we were last in the prem

For the record, I’d be really excited if we hit Xhaka age or not, it’s great to be here. My qualms are that we are in this position because we’ve been smart with our spend and we can all now see the benefits so why change a winning model.

I think you have to adjust it for the Premier League, KS said as much. The gap is so big that you won't get away with it, and the top talent who are a young age cost you a lot in fees and wages (Everyone we have signed so far) and most don't have the league's experience. Not to say they can't do it in the PL, they will, but you need to supplement with some proper experience too and in the PL you can't achieve those on free's like we did in the champ, there is going to be a fee, especially if they are still performing well.

All fair

Still not sure on Neil's potential, I thought he was bang average for quite a bit of last season bar a 2 month period where he was the best CM in the league

I honestly think the point about how many 33 yrs are playing consistently in the PL is totally irrelevant

It's like saying we shouldn't have built a tean of young players as teams don't get promoted with a team of youngsters

As i said I want neil to stay and I want xhaka, I think he would take so much pressure off neil and neil would learn so much from him

neil isn’t good enough for where the club want to go

people who do well in the prem coming from the championship stand out

and for the majority of last season I don’t think he performed or stood out all that well

either way if looking at it, based on age his potential ceiling is limited and his home grown status means a sale is very good for us

I think he’s easily replaced and there’s no room for sentimentality, rigg stays obviously as age and potential are on his side, not the same for Dan now and this stalling on a deal is odd

Good debate this and I don't have a strong opinion on either side so have stayed out of it.

What I will say is not many transfers are without risk and with each transfer its about balancing that risk profile.

Is committing to pay a 35 year old a c £80k p/w contract a risk? Yes it definitely is. But is that risk "worth" the potential that he could be a step change in this first year or two to keep us in the league? That's the decision the recruitment team and ownership need to make.

I'm glad its not me making these decisions but back the club with whatever they decide to do. But even then, our recruitment team hardly have an unblemished record with risky signings - look at giving Poveda a long term deal less than a year ago.

We have to accept that they'll get some right and get some wrong. And the ones that look right might turn out wrong and the ones that look wrong might turn out right.

Adapting can also be the elite version of the same model. Yamal could cope here I’m sure. With our without Xhaka. My point being I’d rather our first option is elite with a future in terms of % investment. Fully take the point join that there’s a balance and as I say at the point we are right now he’s perfect, a year on I’m not so sure. Give him to the Geordies in Neom then I guess or some thick rich Yank.

Every player is replaceable, I think neil showed the player he could be in that 2 month patch where he was a stand out in the league. He now needs to do that consistently, if he does then he's a PL player if he doesn't then we will move on

It all comes down to whether he signs a new deal or not, it's all irrelevant until then

Tbh that’s where I am. I’m making an argument then agreeing with the opposite. I’m just a passionate advocate of the model because it’s the reason why we’re in for Xhaka and the like. Smart business not daft business.

No denying he had a poor game at Wembley. I think he admitted cramp. He knew he had to come off. I am guessing but the whole occasion got to him because he is probably one of the fittest lads in our squad. It was gutting to see tbh.

Maybe I have blinkers on with Neil, probably do. I openly admit to falling in love with players. I always have and always will. Neil has been marvellous to watch in my opinion since day 1. He has got better and better and I do think he will shine on the premier league stage, in a deep lying role where he has the likes of Le Fee finding little pockets of space to pass to (look at Wilsons semi final goal as an example of what I mean). But I may well be wrong - it is just my opinion at the end of the day. Whatever the reality of his potential or ability, as it stands now he is in the contract space where no club wants a player. Decisions needed very soon imo.
Agree, if the club can afford Xhaka and not have to sell Neil, and Neil can agree a new deal, I'd be happy with Xhaka for a year or two as Neil blossoms.

booooooo

I really wanted Lammens

Where next for keeper? Ramsdale gone a bit quiet but that could be us negotiating with him / Southampton. Or could be because it was bollocks.

Would Man Utd buy him and loan him out to get prem experience? Or would he go in as no 1 there? big pressure on a young goalie at man utd
