Neil is rapidly running out of choices imo.

He's not sufficiently talented to merit a starting place in top half PL side ...

... and not tough enough, or nasty enough, for a PL relegation battle.

I think it'll be somewhere like Ipswich tbh, I doubt he'd adapt to Europe.

I think he could do well in Europe Smug. Haven't Bologna been linked with Lennon Miller? I'd be up for a deal with Bologna, where they get Dan plus cash and we get Lucumi. We can then hijack their move for Miller, who's upside is probably much greater than Dan's.

See, that's my problem with all this nonsense, people state 'facts' but they're absolutely ludicrous.

You say, 'Well the bloke who leaked the picture of Xhaka has already been sacked,' as if that's a fact ...

... in reality it's just people who know nothing posting lies on Twitter.
It totally changes what was said.

It is that deep if you care about what's being said in my opinion ...

... otherwise no one will know what's a pack of lies and what isn't.

Claiming someone has been sacked, or committed an offence, could have a real effect on someone's life.
see what you have started. You’ve set him off

Is that source even reliable which claims he's getting the captaincy?
they started reporting about it being a matter of time he joins yesterday and that there was expectation we would agree to the asking price soon, then the news broke of us doing so

Aw yeah I agree. I just dont see us stripping Neil of the captaincy for Xhaka, that just doesnt feel like something we would do imo. Local lad, whole life in the academy, been key in our rise from our lowest ever moment and in his first year as captain lead us to promotion back to the Prem. Would just feel off to me if he was staying and we took it off him, which is why I think if Xhaka is captain, Neil will be going.

Whole contract situation has been a bit of a shame if this is the end of his time here. Would of liked an extension with him competing against the current crop of midfield lads.

The fact that he hasn't committed to the contract and has seemed a bit flat in his performances in pre-season, just makes me wonder if he backs himself against our new signings. Certainly Xhaka and to a lesser degree Diarra are both huge steps up from what we currently have at the club (not including Riggy, who's still developing and could be every bit as good).

I think, especially around afcon, Dan Neil would get his chance personally I hope he stays and fights for game time, he seems like a cracking lad, Sunderland through and through, and I hope he gets a chance here. He’s obviously not at the standard of t.,he bought lads but none of us truly know his ceiling.

It did seem to have a negative effect on him, weight of the world on his shoulders at times and playing with less freedom. I was under the impression he had asked for it though, think if xhaka DOES end up taking the armband then it may confirm the end of Danno in red and white.

Should he go then id rather it be abroad, couldn't watch him playing against us (well at least this season, maybe in the champions league next year)
Think he may have snookered himself a bit as well if the amount of money he is after is true because he won't get that in the championship or many clubs abroad and not many teams in the Premiership who would probably buy/play him

Captaincy = disappointing, for me.

I think it was inevitable mind. We don't even know if Dan will be here at the start of the season, maybe no one does. And I doubt he would be that troubled by a seasoned international coming in and taking on that responsibility.

Hopefully that salary is right m

Sounds about there or thereabouts. He might have an extra year tacked on if he's still here in three years time. if he is, we have stayed up I'd think, and he'd have earned it.

If he is made captain then I can’t see how Neil is staying personally. I understand being ruthless but taking the captaincy off someone who hasn’t done a lot wrong doesn’t feel right to me. Vice captain would have made sense so he gets the armband anyways if Neil isn’t playing.

Obviously all irrelevant if Neil is going and the right choice for captain if Neil does go.
But Dan has to be here to be captain. And if he's here and not signed up, being captain isn't really on.
I wouldn't put too much on it myself, home club or not.

Maybe he's happy giving up the captaincy so he can focus just on his game in a higher league.

Maybe he's thinking longer term and knows he'll learn a thing or two from Xhaka as captain.

Maybe he'll go to vice captain, Xhaka captain and O'Nien club captain.

Not unreasonable any of that.

I dont see Dan Neil staying past this window if there is no new deal signed regardless of who we sign or regardless of captaincy. Club wont lose out on the fee he could bring in.

Clearly the right choice in my opinion, I never felt giving Neil the captaincy fit well.

We're now a multi-lingual club and I doubt Neil is inclined to learn languages.

We have so many nationalities now, the captain needs to be able to get the message across on the pitch.

Hume would've been a possibility but I think he needs to focus on his game.

I'd agree about the captaincy going to Xhaka. Stand out for the job.

Neil is fine by me and I hope he stays, though on the languages, I do think, as Wenger did at Arsenal, that we should as soon as possible, insist on English during training and at matches etc. I think most of the lads speak English anyway, and it stops cliques forming, which Wenger said was the main aim.
