He struggled for a long period and looked as though he’d be leaving the club but he’s been superb under Neil and clearly an important player for us these days. I hope O’Nien becomes half the player Gooch has been for SAFC, but I can’t see it.

I think he did nearly leave didn't he, I'm glad he didn't. He seems to be finding his role with Neil and he's putting in some top performances.

I don't agree that O'Nien is worth half of Gooch I'd put them almost on a par but that's football for you.

He was linked with Shrewsbury in the last couple of days of the January window. They wanted to sign him and Flanagan. There was talk of Gooch turning them down…

Yeah I remember the rumour being that he turned down a transfer because he wanted to stay. I bet Neil is making him feel appreciated he'll be his kind of player. His crossing is getting better and better.

while we will never know for sure*, gooch always seemed to want to beat the man or two of them at least before playing the ball, since A.N. came in he has kept it far more simple and looks a much better player for doing so.

onien is one of those players you cannot help but love, he works his bollox off, he tackles hard and he gives 110% whatever position he finds himself in..but he really needs to make those tackles count and time them right, someone mentioned bally and while he went in hard i can't remember a single time he went for the player, onien needs to work on that.

EDIT: i meant to say while LJ was manager so we will never know if he was asked/told/instructed to do that.

The closest might have been when he was brought on to silence Lee Sharpe who was running riot against us at Man U one year. 3-0 down at half time and would have been about 8 if Bally hadn't introduced himself to him. He didn't want to know after that, and the game was pretty much over.

Here's one time, he almost snaps the guy in half at the waist.

Wasn't our player at the time obviously but it wasn't long after he left us and it's how I remember him as a player. Tough tackling that is.

not in our colours there though ;)

come to think of it, he did quite a few 'risque' ones he would never get away with now.

Yeah that's the point I'm trying to make, we used to idolise players who put in hard challenges but when O'Nien does them some people can't wait to jump on it and ignore the good work he does.

Football has changed since Bally and Luke does need to be more intelligent because he could/should have been sent off twice but at the same time he's one of the few players we have ahead of defence who relish the physical challenge.

not sure i can remember a time when we were all so divisive on players but i can honestly say there is not a single one right now that i would complain about if i saw his name on the team sheet, although i guess i could find something somewhere in their game that could improve, but is that just me?

sometimes i read reports from others and think we only see what we want to see, ie: a fave player will have a great game yet others say he was dire, watching the full 90 again and i see their point of view. (sometimes)

I'm torn on 09. Defence is the only position I think he's good enough to play. He did have a good game against Sheff Utd but he should have been sent off twice now but bad refereeing means he's still available.

The guy is a liability. He's the dirtiest player in English football, imo. He needs to start going for the ball and not the legs. If he calms that down I'd happily start him every game CB until someone can dislodge him.

It's only a matter of time before he seriously hurts somebody or ends up being banned.

I still idolise tough tackling players and O9 fits the bill for our current team. He did a job 2nd half in the play-offs final. Who cannot admire the battle...

Or cherish it.

I love 09. He’s class. Love his competitiveness. Ballard is out from an unpenalised filthy tackle, so get stuck in lad. Anyway it’s Friday.

Will we see a breakthrough on incomings today? Got to love in hope we have something close.

Must admit the window seems quite slow this year for most teams
