Being bombarded with emails is a benefit of membership? Bloody hell, I'm glad I give them an email address I have, but never look at, or it would put me right off! (actually you've just caused me to check it though. I won't look again as I have 17k unread emails in it! )
I get regular emails from Hull Live and don't remember signing up for anything. The other stuff comes via facebook, just headed 'Hull City' and there's loads of stuff, interviews, etc. I just presumed it was all part of the membership scheme. Before the club and RH fell out it used to infuriate me when City didn't get a mention on the Sports Bulletins. It was always GY, Scunny and of course RL, even when it wasn't RL season. Sometimes they'd include national sport and the Premier League and still failed to mention City at all. I was told it was because City don't tell them anything but are we supposed to believe that the likes of Man City, Leeds Rhinos and Man Utd personally ring up Gwillum everyday with the latest news ?
Maybe we should close this thread now the windows shut?? we can disagree and call each other ****s on other threads
But there might still be some free agent signings at Forest Green Rovers that I need to update Castro on...
To be honest, I think we'll probably go in for another CDM in January, even though it most likely won't be Slater since this whole 3 month saga has probably left a sour taste in the poor lad's mouth. Smallwood is out-of-contract and M. Smith probably won't be joining us permanently. Smith apparently had a very good game for Wales t'other night and I think Man City are the sort of team who would only let him go for seven figures. A cursory look at Man City's outgoings for the past few years indicate they command hefty amounts for even their reserves and squad players. Jack Harrison was nowhere near Man City's first team and after three loans with our friends across the M62, they managed to get £13 million for him. I think Man City would probably want anywhere from £2.5M to £5M for Smith. We'll probably let Smallwood's contract run out and he'll probably drop down to League 1 and try and help another team get promoted to the Championship as he's good at that. There's also Tom H, who we may or may not activate his optional year. Whilst we have enough bodies in midfield now, we're likely to lose 2, maybe 3, senior midfielders next summer. We could always move Alfie back into that role but I think chopping and changing his position from centre-half to defensive midfield and back again isn't great for his development as he needs consistency in a primary position. Whilst I thought the Slater signing late in the window was pointless, it makes more sense long-term if the club wanted a loan-to-buy situation. Preferably, a CDM who is youngish, more agile and better on the ball than Smallwood but also a ****house who doesn't shirk a tackle, someone like Laurent from Reading, who is out-of-contract next summer.
Total opposite of me then. We outplayed just about every team in League One. The squad has been improved. We did not just scrape promotion, the team were considered by most pundits to be a Championship team last season. As for the game on Saturday, we contained Bournemouth who are considered to be amongst the favourites for promotion. We hit the cross bar and Williams shot at goal that was just wide left their keeper flat footed on his line. They have a squad that is still benefitting from parachute payments and has a value 10 times ours. We didn't just beat Preston, we hammered them. It may feel like we are a league one club in an cup tie, to you, but I see it that we can and do compete with the clubs who have big budgets. Time will tell of course but I only have positives about this season until, I am proved wrong.
The way I see it, we made it through a transfer window without losing our best players and hottest prospects. KLP is still here, Wilks is still here and Greaves is still here, so that's a win. Nobody else of any importance left and we still have pretty much the same squad we had last season, so that success is embedded. We *could* have signed more experienced players, but they cost money so the club instead doubled down on it's "buy low sell high" policy of developing young players. The players that have come in have added competition to a squad that was the best in League One last season, so I have no complaints about how it went. Yeah, experience is important but it isn't essential. The only way the likes of Greaves and Jones will get better is by playing Championship football. This is Greaves' third full season in the EFL; he played a full season in League Two and did really well, then did a season in League One and was fantastic, I see no reason why he can't step up again and while it's been a baptism of fire for him, I don't think he's looked particularly shaky or error prone. Cliff Byrne was a solid centre half and so was Michael Duff (his manager at Cheltenham), so he's clearly learning from the right people. Up front is a bit shaky but I was impressed with Smith against Bournemouth and I think Josh Magennis will be a great mentor for him (aside from the offside rule, maybe watch somebody else for that). I also have to keep reminding myself that we still have Wilks to come back. In goal, we have Matt Ingram (who mistakes aside has looked half decent) and we have a young Chelsea goalkeeper who comes highly rated, plus Cartwright/Robson waiting in the wings or for cup games. Overall, I think people need to be realistic. Have Blackpool/Peterborough made Championship level signings? No, not really, not more so than we already had. I think we'll be in the bottom half, but I think the ethics instilled in this squad will see them finish somewhere around 18th. Might get squeaky at times, but we will do fine I reckon.
Saying that, Rinomhota is just as good and also out-of-contract next summer. Either Rinomhota or Laurent would be a great addition in that double-pivot alongside Docherty.
You asked... but okay. I told you to Google it because it takes a few seconds and I couldn't be arsed explaining given your attitude.
My only issue with our transfer window activity is not filling all our squad spaces. In an ideal world an experienced centre half and forward would have been fantastic. But not essential. I’m not overly bothered about Slater, but only because midfield was probably the last area we needed strengthening. I do feel sorry for Slater himself as the kid deserves first team football, whether with us or not. Whoever ****ed up on deadline day, it’s to the detriment of this lad getting out and playing football.
