Next year's Championship looks on paper to be the toughest in years. I'd be vary wary about making sweeping changes unless we really feel we have to because a slow start could be fatal. For that reason, I'd be more than happy going into the season with most of what we had, a year older. Get a midfielder or two to get us playing on the front foot (assuming a couple leave) and a real organiser at the back and then all down to the manager instilling a winning, possession based style of play from the off. I really don't want us to be scrapping around for Dele Ali on transfer deadline day because the 8 other new signings haven't hit the ground running.
Just popped over to Saints Web and much like any manager it appears any player anyone suggests isn't good enough for us. I'm not sure but have we suddenly become Barcelona or something?
I'd happily pay Newcastle to take him away. But no doubt if he does go there, he'll turn out to be as talented as he has occasionally looked for us. The brain farts and useless lumpness we all know and fear will disappear, and he'll morph into a world class defender.
People still have PL expectations and haven’t quite clocked where we are yet it would seem. E.g People turning their nose up at the suggestion of Matt Grimes for being a Championship version of JWP….
I would have been all over Mee! Cracking player. I think I’d be in for Coady this season too if I were SR
Ditto on both. Although I think I heard that Coady doesn't really want to uproot his family, which is why the Everton loan was so favourable. I wonder if someone like Sheffield United might have a shot at him.
This is the team that I would love to see us lining up for the first game of next season... Baz Tino New CB Bedders Manning Grimes Smallbone Sulumana Charly Tella Piroe Plenty of goals and creativity there. Grimes is pivitol to the way RM team plays and he is the leader we lack on the pitch so if there is only one player he brings with him from Swansea it would be him.
I'm hoping we can get someone with a bit more bite in the middle than Smallbone. I like Smallbone, and he will be a useful squad player, but not a starter for me.
He's a great passer of the ball with vision which will be crucial, maybe he's got a bit more aggressive playing in the Championship. People used the same argument about JWP iirc.
From the latest segment of Sport Republic's interview with The Daily Echo, published today (June 1) Rasmus Ankersen: “January is always very tough, it is tough from a financial perspective. Nobody wants to lose their best players in January, players need to hit the ground running – it’s tough when there is no pre-season, so there is always a risk on recruitment. “I think a couple of the players like (Charly) Alcaraz and to an extent Sulemana have done well, but there have clearly been some mis-hits where the players haven’t had an impact for one reason or another. "There will be some turnover because the squad is too big but there are some very talented football players in that group which we will be intending to keep. I think it’s more an exciting job for the manager and director of football, if I was the manager that looked into the dressing room, I wouldn’t be too worried.” “We are not going to go back in (the Premier League) and compete on money, we will invest, but that is why we are building the club network we are – to try and get the players into our system before they cost £30million. Time will tell whether that will be successful or not but I think there is some good evidence from other clubs that it is possible to do. “There is also a lot of talent there in our squad that can improve, hopefully we can get a good pre-season, play some exciting football, entertain fans and win football matches.”
Yeah I would love it if Smallbone becomes a big player for us. Academy lad plus he's been through some rough sh*t with the alopecia.
He loves a shot outside of the box too, I was always impressed when he played for ROI and wished he'd stayed last season although I bet our managers wouldn't have played him much anyway!
