I think it's fair to say that Forte will never have a career in the Championship, but I do hope that Dickson and Barnard are both given a chance by a Championship team to prove themselves.

People can make their own opinions on the two of them with regards to how good they are, but ultimately until they're given a proper shot at Championship foootball, I don't think anyone can really say one way or other whether or not they are capable of playing in the second tier.

Best of luck to the three of them, but we've moved on.

Well you're not as perceptive as I took you for then.

With a few exceptions, all of the players were playing at their limit in Lge One, yet they all progressed. Their's was a continuous path of progression, whereas Barnard's was hugely interrupted by injury and to a lesser extent, his legal distraction. I have said, I agree that he wasn't upto PL standard, but I think he could have made a fine Championship striker, and may yet still do. Your one line - he isn't/wasn't that good - summary of his Saints career is a trifle harsh, IMO.

And to the other poster, who suggested Nigel Adkins knows more than I do [legod knows how that person interpreted that obvious fact from the posts] I totally agree. However, that wasn't being debated.

Back to the subject of Barnard, Forte and Dickson - I wish them all the best in their future careers. Hopefully, they'll speak well of Southampton FC.

I said he ISN'T that good. It's not a summary of his whole Saints career, it's an assessment of his value to the team at present. I agree, he could do a decent job in the Championship if he found the right team, but it'd be for a team that's happy to be in the Championship, not one that's a serious contender for the Premier League. There are plenty of League One strikers who are technically better than Lee Barnard.

If you disagree with any of that, then I think you're being slightly blinded by sentiment.

Forte and Dickson will probably have interest from their respective loan clubs of Notts County and Leyton Orient. I hear Swindon are interested in Barnard?

Depends if he becomes a regular or not. I think people seem to forgot his league one goal tally which is even more impressive considering he wasn't penalty taker and didn't start in a lot of games.

Barnard is a good finisher and I would guess could play for half the Championship teams..the problem is finding one that needs him.

And one that would take the risk of signing someone who hasn't performed at that level yet. I think Swindon is the right level for him. If they progress, then he can progress with them, but another season in League One would probably be best considering he has hardly played since 2010.

Just seen on SSN where it says all the signings the Prem clubs have made, and had the fees next to it.

Rodriguez - £6m
Gazzaniga - Undisc.
Davis - Free
Clyne - £2m

So looking at that we are spending a safe amount. <ok>

Not throwing money out like West Sham.

Probably appropriate for the rumours thread: I've seen this pointed about by every Saints fan's favourite Nick Illingsworth - odds for Adkins to get the sack have been slashed to 7/1 (now second favourite) with Cortese also second favourite to leave against a backdrop of rumours that the two have had a falling out. Obviously a load of tripe.

He really is a plonker.

Rumour is one that has been building because Cortese was said to be unhappy about Anderlecht result. He probably said, 'Nigel, thought we might win there.' Cortese has got where he has wanted to be and the chance to implement his plans...sure to leave because we lose 1.0 in an early preseason match.

Rupert Lowes bum chum chatting **** again.

Cortese is known to be very bad at watching games and on that day wanted to impress the Leihberrs...but is blown completely out of proportion. Wouldn't be getting the players that Nigel wants if he was about to sack him. In interviews, I have never seen Nigel look so relaxed.

Can't see Forte or Dickson ever having a career above League One, Barnard could do a job in a lower Champ side I think but good luck to all of them, they all player their part and it's a shame we've bypassed them now

What?

West Ham have bought:

Modibo Maiga - £4.7m
James Collins - £2.5m
George McCartney - £2m
Mohamed Diame - FREE
Jussi Jaaskelainen - FREE

Only £9.2m.

Gazzaniga was supposedly £2m-£2.5m, and Davis wasn't free either.

So we've spent at least £10m.

We've spent more than them so how are they 'throwing money out'?

To be fair, they are also linked with about 5000 players.
