Luke Shaw will break through this year, no point signing a new LB and blocking his breakthrough

Yeah see what you mean, but it does put a lot of pressure on a player young like him and a position like left back is a place which needs to be strong. But I am not sure what you will do, you will probably go with Fox at left back.

It all depends who you are playing. Anyone who went to Bristol last season will know Fox is going to struggle against a fast and tricky winger.. Lallana for all his skills is not the world's best defender which will leave us vulnerable down our left if teams have a good right winger, or even an opposition manager who works it out and attacks us done that wing. The right side of the defence may suffer from the same problem depending on who is selected to play right midfield. Guly in front of Richardson or Butters does not inspire confidence. So if you play Lallana away from home I would play Harding rather than Fox. Neither of the right backs look to me like premier league players. Butters is not good enough going back or forward. Richardson has good skills going forward, but I doubt his defensive capabilities.. How long before Shaw and Stephens are up for it? The centre back issue is obvious we need cover.. at least one, as also a goalkeeper.. So SKD, Hoovield and Fonte are good enough but we are vulnerable down the flanks.
J Rod may allow Lambert to play deeper, but away from home the 'front of the diamond' may need to be more mobile. I think Trotter might be a good shout. Just another 20 mill then and it should be sorted..

What you said about Richardson regarding him being good going forward and him having a lot of skill but lacking defensively is quite normal, I have to say there are a lot of Right backs who are like that, many leave it open at the back as they go forward a lot, Glen Johnson used to do that all the time, also Richards does that here and there, I think a lot of the best right backs do seem to leave it open at the back as they attack so much.

Very good summation.

You say that but the last left back to break through for us wasn't half bad...

Why has Richardson suddenly become a bad defender is so many people's eyes. For sure, we can do better than him, but that applies to every in the squad. If we kicked off on the opening day with Richardson starting, I wouldn't be worried.

Every other person seems to be saying we need a new RB, but why any more so than a new GK or LB or CB or RW or ACM?

That said, I do think we need cover (unless we sign a really top draw RB) as I'm not convinced that Butterfield could handle the PL.

Let's face it, no one decides to be a full back because they want the fame and glory. I reckon Fox and Richardson will line up on day 1.

I really cant see Shaw breaking through this year, didnt have a start in the league so cant be that close to Hardings level yet

No idea why the FL ever decided to get rid of it... thankfully they reverted to 7 just after we left them!!

Are you saying the Football league have gone back to 7 subs for next season Dan? I hadn't heard that, or have I mis-understood what you meant?

Wayne Bridge was not bad either..............

I don't think Bridge was that good really. He was lucky to have Chris Marsden playing in front of him. The difference between him and Bale is immense. Even at 17 Bale wanted the ball, would take free kicks and corners etc. To Bridge, the ball always seemed like a hot potato and he would get rid of it as soon as he could. Good crosser though.

From what I've heard, we have made a bid for Butland but it was rejected because it was in installments, B'ham want the money up front

Supposedly saints are set to sign two african players within the next week with one being tunisian centre back Aymen Abdenour as he's shown on saintsplayer video with rodriguez along with another new signing from africa as well. The two african guys are being bought in through Jaidi's knowledge of african football and links in with his new role at the football club.
