I don't think the defense needs As much strengthening as people say.. Yea it's very light! but 2 more CB and 1 RB and i could think we have a pretty good defense. for the first season of course.

I think Jose Fonte is good enough at least, and Hooveld may be good enough, not sure about Fox but he may be OK, may just be a right back you need and a good back up centre back or someone to replace Hooveld.

Really?!? I think Hooiveld made Fonte look poor this season.

Fox is a defensive liability, and will be skinned by better opposition - same with Richardson

So centre back x2, and perhaps a right back on loan (due to the emergence of Stephens within the next year)

Agree about Fox. I think Harding is a better defender AND he will get beyond the opposing full back to deliver a cross or even grab a goal or two. Fox takes brilliant corners but not much else that I can see, he was savaged by Bristol City and Blackpool wingers last year. I know Fox is a popular player on this forum but I've never quite understood why.

I think that both right backs have done fairly well. Neither was torn apart and both are fairly good coming forward. Still maybe not premier league standard. Certainly need either some cover at cb or indeed someone to start.

I thought you may need a right back but if Fox is not good enough why do you not think you need a left back or do you think Harding is better.

Harding would get ripped a new one in the prem <laugh>

I think personally looking at it from a neutral position maybe a left back and a right back who have experience in the Premiership and a good Centre back who could be a back up.
But I think Adkins would like to stick with most of the team, as he seems to be the sort of person who don't like to change something unless it is broken.

It all depends who you are playing. Anyone who went to Bristol last season will know Fox is going to struggle against a fast and tricky winger.. Lallana for all his skills is not the world's best defender which will leave us vulnerable down our left if teams have a good right winger, or even an opposition manager who works it out and attacks us done that wing. The right side of the defence may suffer from the same problem depending on who is selected to play right midfield. Guly in front of Richardson or Butters does not inspire confidence. So if you play Lallana away from home I would play Harding rather than Fox. Neither of the right backs look to me like premier league players. Butters is not good enough going back or forward. Richardson has good skills going forward, but I doubt his defensive capabilities.. How long before Shaw and Stephens are up for it? The centre back issue is obvious we need cover.. at least one, as also a goalkeeper.. So SKD, Hoovield and Fonte are good enough but we are vulnerable down the flanks.
J Rod may allow Lambert to play deeper, but away from home the 'front of the diamond' may need to be more mobile. I think Trotter might be a good shout. Just another 20 mill then and it should be sorted..
