I don't think people realise how big of a decision Jay has to make. He's Burnley through and through and all of his family live in Lancashire. Imagine the roles were reversed and it was you - you play for Saints in the Championship and PL Burnley have just had a £7m bid accepted for you - do you leave everything you know for a club that you don't see to be much bigger than yours just to play in the Premiership? Or do you sit tight and wait/hope for an offer from a bigger club who are closer to home to come in for you? OR do you stay at your hometown club and play for the shirt you've dreamed of wearing professionally since you were a kid, with the knowledge that you could be risking YEARS of your career to be played in the Football League.

I'm not surprised this has dragged on a long time, this one decision will change the rest of his life, if he gets it wrong, he may be sacrificing what could be a very successful career with England call-ups and medals.

I think we see Butland as able to challenge KD now. I don't think he will sign for us otherwise, as he will be first choice at Birmingham.

do you really?

he had half a season in league 2 last year. I understand he is meant to be good, but could he get into a premier league team right now?Not sure how many people have seen him play, and even less have seen him play against premier league players.

Only those watching england train the last week have seen that, and he is only in the squad for experience as the 3rd choice keeper never plays

Yes absolutely, what part of that do you disagree with? If he stays at Birmingham he will be first choice, why would he leave merely to be considered a future prospect? He wants to play, and we wouldn't be bidding £3.5m for just a backup.

I do not think he will even be an automatic first choice at Birmingham. He will stand more of a chance their than with us.

I think he can still be persuaded to leave, as Birmingham do not have the same prospects as us in the near future.

Plus if we get him for £3.5m it is a great bit of business as if he becomes first choice in 2 years at 21 and a regular prem keeper and english he will be worth £10m.

i just do not think he will pushing KD this season if we get him, and should loan him out to championship team.

I see that Hughton is in talks with Norwich - might this encourage Butland to seek 'pastures new' with us? Or might he be chased by Norwich if Hughton joins...?

Re the fee for butland if true. Thats a huge amount of money for a 19 year old who has played 25 league two matches in total. Dont mind buying him if weve scouted him and hes the real deal but I dont expect many clubs would bid that much for him.

Luckily Norwich have Ruddy. Even if they were interested, I'll think they will have to invest what cash they have on a striker. They would have gone for Rodriguez - but they would need the cash from the unsettled Holt. So getting in early was definitely a good idea. Now, just the small matter of JR signing<whistle>

I don't think that Norwich will be too interested, they would have to find the money for him and they are probably a lot more interested in replacing Holt.

Anyway, I don't think it's worth flapping too much about Butland. From what I have read so far the rumours don't seem very concrete to me. Young goalkeeper quickly rising to media attention due to call up, promoted club possibly looking for player in said position expected to have money to spend, sounds like an easy way to fill empty inches. Have we looked at him? Probably, along with the rest of the Premiership. Are we about to sign him? I doubt it. Anyway he's in Poland at the moment so there definitely won't be any action for the next two weeks.

For now. I wouldn't be surprised if another PL team came in for him.

To be fair, Scezney was only in league one for a season or 2 before arsenal called him up to their first team...

Butland would be a good signing, but I'd like to see a GK come in who would immediately be competing for a first team spot. Regardless of his talent - Butland has played very few games.

Gordan is a good keeper, but will demand large wages and his injury record isn't great

Maybe we should poach Forster from Celtic at the last minute - that would really piss off the Celtic fans!

Like the Rodriguez deal, this could potentially reap big dividends if it works out. Young, English players who have proved themself cost a fortune and snapping up bargains requires having faith in players from outside the big time bubble.

I live in Winchester and have done since I was born. I'm fond of the place, but I have ambitions to leave when I have an opportunity to do so to somwhere more exciting. If Jay Rod doesn't think likewise, I doubt we'd be persuing him quite frankly. What sort of 22 year old with as much promise as he has aspires to stay in his hometown for the duration of his sporting career? If we're the only offer on the table, I can't see the decision being a hard one.

Good move for martin lets hope he gets regular game time, hes certainly capable. We definitly need two centre backs now perhaps one on loan but you have to have four fit available players in this posistion.
