We signed Distin at nearly 32 and got 5 good years out of him (then he fell out with Martinez) He was a model pro in fairness, but it shows that especially for a CB, then being post 30 isn't what it was maybe 25-30 years ago, as you correctly say, these guys are proper athletes these days.
Thats why i cringe sometimes when a fan says thet player is not worth it he is past 30........But as i say not all players can keep their fitness past 30 to play at a standard good enough for premiership football......We have a cracking player in Leon who struggles to play every game but what a player we have that we can use him when we want.
The problem is that these players are the exception and not the rule, Ash has two seasons left to him at this level, he could probably get another two seasons at a lower level, but he will be more a bit part player then. In my opinion £10m was a fair price for him, but the club is probably after a few more off Everton, it's up to them to come up to that. I'm pretty confident they will and Ash will be gone by the end of the week.
Talking of big signings, there was a report on big signings on the news last night - they said that since the signing of Ibrahimovic, Man U had made 76 Million in shirt sales in a week. !!!!!!!
They're becoming less the exception as time goes on though, especially at CB. Jagielka is about to turn 34, Fonte is 32, Terry is 36 this season. I agree completely with the rest, the wording of the statement put out last night was obvious "the offer currently on the table". I'd expect a deal to be done in the next day or 2 aswell.
Regarding Ash. 'A club spokesman said: "We are not looking to sell him and therefore we have turned down the offer currently on the table."' To me, that says "come back with a better offer", not "we will not sell him"
Fingers crossed. Could just be some poker-face/bluff stuff from Everton to aid in negotiation for ash.
I've just seen that article. One maybe two signings this week. Notable comments were The more of our work that remains confidential, then the better chance we have of protecting our on-going negotiations and getting transfers over the finishing line. "The more leaks we have and stories in the media, then the more chance there is of alerting other clubs and the transfer falling through." I've been banging on about Borja Baston on here a few times, and all i got from Jager was 'who the hell is he', and the only one who acknowledged my recommendation was Trundle in fairness to him, I hope we get him and not WBA, he will get us goals...........
