Saints fan here. 20mill bid rejected as we value him higher. Suspect the fee will be nearer 30 including add ons.
Alex Crook on talkSPORT reporting that we have submitted a £20 million bid, “talks ongoing” was his comment. Whether that’s a rejection as the saints fan said or not wasn’t expanded on.
I wouldn't be paying £20 million on him, full stop. He's a championship player. It's like McAtee last year, some idiot will pay what Southampton want from him

You have to trust your scouts to work out whether the player’s skill set will adapt and whether they have room for improvement. Charles is still only 22. I guess, despite not being an auto first choice last year, that our team see something in Charles.

At £20+ million I would expect us to sign a starter. Yes he might have potential and he's an ex man city academy player but I think we need to learn a lesson from Forest signing McAtee last summer. The thing is we could get Hackney for 15 million possibly less.
I’ve not seen enough of Charles to form an opinion.but I just wouldn’t write him off because when he came back from injury he was used in rotation in a particular formation. The sheff wed fans all rated him, the Southampton fans all rate him. Just because mcatee hasn’t set the world on fire doesn’t automatically mean Charles won’t do well.
As is well documented, I do rate Hackney - but no one seems to want to pay the money his figures suggest he’s worth. And he’s a very different profile of player.
Because we have a ton of depth in midfield. And if it means we keep Caspar Jander every Saints fan would take that in a heartbeat. Doesn't mean Charles wouldn't do the business for you though.
This was a post i made on 21st May. I'm glad @tomw24 has come on here and mentioned this lad. He looks a better prospect than Shea Charles in my opinion.
I've no problem with signing Charles either. He was exceptional in a poor Sheff Wed side and was decent last year for Southampton. The important thing about him is that he still manages to impress as he steps up to better sides. We'd be gambling that he can step up again.
And there's plenty who think they should be getting £30m. We won't have offered £20m anyway. Press always pump up the add-ons. But we might end up paying more, who knows.
Jander is a really good player, but very different profile/style to Charles.
Recruitment teams profile attributes for positions and they've identified Charles for a reason. Big lad fc being one of them. They may be right, they may be wrong but last year they got more right than wrong.
If we signed Charles I'd expect Gruev to go.
If we signed Jander I'd expect Aaronson or Tanaka to be under threat.

Yup… Charles has played more advanced I think this year but was originally centre back then DM. I imagine it’s a combination of the flexibility, age, size and the fact he’s looked quite good in a NI shirt against good opposition that appeals
Ipswich went down the line of buying up the best of the championship players and got relegated. Just as a reminder of the jump that is required for the premier league.
