Free transfer so wouldn't be against him as an option. I would only worry if we would be signing him as our first choice striker.
I would love us to have a squad with players we feel could do a job in the premierleague OR are young and chomping at the bit to be involved in the first team (excpetions might be Armstrong and possibly Stephens). He is neither and I think we've made the mistake in the past of blocking players with this kind of signing. Good value but ultimately just there as an 'incase' option
Not sure who he would be blocking unless you mean another incomings. It would come down to the wages as we don’t want to get him on a deal that makes him hard to move on (even on loan) if we do get promoted and don’t think he will be up to it
He's 29, will be 30 by the time the season starts and has spent his whole career in Scottish football, not even playing for the big 2! Yea he sounds very classy, just what we need!
He is free and wages will be low coming from Scotland. Our current strikers are: Armstrong: Probably stay but not sure Archer: Likely off Onuachu: Definitely off Stewart: Can't count on him at all So assuming you want 3 strikers + a Ross Stewart, we would still be bringing in a minimum of 2, or 3 if Archer or Arma leave. We don't have the funds to go and spend big on squad options so a deal like this is smart and necessary.
I wouldn't define signing a striker who can score goals against the likes of Dundee and Hibernian as necessary, but each to there own.
What sort of budget do you think we will have for signings this summer and how much of it would you think we should spend on a 3rd (at best) choice striker?
He wanted out in January and admitted he wasn't focused on Saints. Can't imagine he will hang about and we could probably get an alright fee.
But didn't we all want out in January! Even some supporters cancelled their season tickets! Next year they will probably buy another.
Fair point, but if he is coming out and openly admitting his head was elsewhere when we were really struggling, I can imagine he will jump ship as soon as he can. You never know, and a new manager might help things, but he hardly seems to give a sh*t about the club.
Who's going to buy him and give him a better wage though? It's possible he'll go but I wouldn't go as far as likely. He probably partly wanted our due to a lack of game time too and he should get plenty next season here
Kilmarnock's fan view on Shankland: "I'll be surprised if Shankland is good enough for Saints. He's a big round lump. Scored for fun for a while and then went off the boil. I think he's probably past it now just cos if his weight... He does score all types of goals though. But think the top half of the championship is too high a level for him and he'll quickly get found out"
