The talk that we won't be using our second loan slot on a GK is quite exciting, because hopefully we can now use it to get an outfield player who might otherwise have been outside of our price range.

Obviously not someone from Chelsea - which is a shame, given they have a whole squad available for hire - but that still leaves a number of other PL clubs to speak to.
This. Plus the fact we're getting an international standard goalkeeper for less than 10mill. OK we have to accept his lengthy injury history but that's precisely the reason why he's attainable for us in the first place.

I’m not sure about this second loan slot. I had a look through the premier league squads of the top sides who are likely to have excess players and there didn’t seem to be a wealth of attacking options that would make for a useful loan. Granted this is restricted to players I’ve vaguely heard of. So for example if we hadn’t been linked with him I wouldn’t have Doak on the list but as it stands he seems like one of the few:

Doak
McAtee (would upset the people who are annoyed that we have reunited Sheffield United’s strike force)
Reiss Nelson
Ryan Fraser
Manor Solomon

Didn’t seem like an overly long list (once you cut Chelsea out as options). And predictably no actual strikers. Not sure about overseas loan options. I sure there must be plenty. But those might not really fit the “outside our price range” criteria as foreign clubs don’t tend to have the finances to stockpile such players. Apart from players who are outside our price range for max total spend reasons

Then of course there is Ings or JWP who West Ham might want off the wage bill but I’m not sure Ings is an answer even as a loan and JWP now has lots of people in his position in our squad

Top candidate would have been Oscar Bobb but he has broken his leg and it looked like City might use him this year. A potential option for January for fitness but he’d probably have an easier time getting minutes and fitness in the city side where they are controlling games than ours.

I wouldn't be surprised if we took Oscar Bobb on loan for the season!

Good list. Though I'd add Vinicius and Calum Wilson as players I think will move before the end of the window and could be very useful to us.

(And I also think it's prudent to wait to see what others do and scoop up after them!)

I didn’t look at Fulham really. Isn’t Wilson one of only two strikers Newcastle have? Can’t see him moving unless they get another striker - and as it apparent, there aren’t many about. And fewer who will join as guaranteed second choice

I suspect they will but may be beyond them now, you're right.

Worth keeping an eye on Forest too. If they get Nketiah, with Wood and Dennis there too then can't imagine Awoniyi sticking around. Absolutely loved him at Berlin when I saw him. He and Archer in rotation would be lovely.

(Though I expect second loan to be an attacking midfielder or winger if we get a keeper)

Nketiah heading to Forest, they can’t agree a fee with Feyenoord for Gimenez
I’m not surprised. They bid 21m. If that was all he was worth then every club in the league would have bid for him. Even city as a backup. They were being chancers.

I’m surprised no one else has gone in for Samu from Atletico. The fee agreed with Chelsea was 35m and unless that is inflated due to weird dodgy dealings to fund/facilitate the 100% profit sale of Gallagher then I don’t understand why others haven’t tried. Unless it’s the opposite and they want a much higher fee from anyone else

They are paying up to 30m for him. Which seems dreadful value. There is a very good chance that he only looks half the player he does because he has chances laid on by Arsenal players. And at least 100k wages that he specifically didn’t want to drop. For a club that got a points deduction last season for financial reasons. Interesting. Have they made any sales to balance their books? I assume they will need to eventually ? They did one of the dodgy deals didn’t they? But they paid out more on their end than they got in

God, it just dawned on me we are going be be distraught when we don't get a second loan, aren't we?
I already noted this earlier - that I’d be disappointed but that it wouldn’t be unprecedented because that’s what happened in the last two premier league seasons. I wondered whether we deliberately kept the space open for January but we still didn’t use it

Would take some real financial constraints and lack of suitors for Forest to loan us a player. Especially a striker who can score goals. They’d want to sell I expect - and if it’s within the premier league then sell big

But it is a crazy thing to do with regards to a potential rival
