Because, as many have alluded to, he's been surrounded by inept, inexperienced players. I would argue that if you took Vlaar out of Villas's team last season, they'd be in the Championship now

I really do rate Vlaar. He holds that Villa side together.

He was good against us. Wasn't it after he had to come off that we finally broke them down (only to lose anyway)?

I'm a Vlaar fan. He's been made to look bad by the utter ****e that was around him.

I quite like Vlaar, but I don't think too much can be made of his performances in the WC as he was playing in a back 3 and was freed from some of the responsibilities he'd have playing in a back 4 and a high line.

Vlaar is a good defender, and would be a good addition, I think. However, we would probably need another CB regardless though.

The whoscored article really highlighted how he is the outstanding player in that team, despite being barely noticed by some. He's a leader and a sensible, careful player.

A couple of lines from Gordon Simpson at the Echo, who are now closer to the club and being used in some cases as a mouthpiece...

@gordonsimpson: Saints intend to make a second bid for Fraser Forster, after Celtic reject opening offer for keeper: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/11..._after_Celtic_reject_opening_offer/?ref=var_0 … #saintsfc

@gordonsimpson: Club also likely to go back for Norwich winger Nathan Redmond, after opening bid for him was rejected last week. #saintsfc

Anyone who didn't want Caulker can breath a sigh of relief then.

As for Forster, I wouldn't mind us going over budget to sign him. I think he could be a great signing for us.

Torn on Redmond but we could be a good place for him to develop. He's certainly put in some promising performances, just not as regularly as you'd like.

Eh. If Redmond is like, £2m, and is purely a change of pace option from the bench, it'd be fine.

Rather have Redmond for 5m then have Isgrove.

Rather have other players for 5m than either of them.

Especially as Redmond will probably cost more than £5m

    .

Exactly as Isgrove couldn't even hold down a starting place in Posh's side at the end of last season. I'll be very surprised if he makes it with Saints

Are we still in for Ings Beefy? or have we moved onto Gudietti from Man City. With Osvaldo hopefully going , Jrod injured , Mayuka and Sharpe not good enough and Gallagher not ready yet imo are we likely to see more than 1 striker signing?

I think Koeman is looking to play proper wingers this season. Looking at the players he's played alongside Pelle so far, they seem to be wingers rather than 'drifters'. Of course, I could be completely wrong, and Pelle may not even be our leading striker next season. If right, then we could do with one or two more wingers.

If we're going to play with two wingers lumping crosses in to Pelle, though, we'll need wingers that can cross. I actually like Redmond, and think that he'd be a decent option at a cheap price and playing in a role where we weren't reliant upon him, but he does lack end product at times.

I agree. I like Redmond, and personally thought we should have bought him before he joined Norwich.
