I think Cortese probably did do a mini-Risdale. I don't think you can attract and retain players with a snazzy DVD and a vision. And I mean, he did appear to be a bit of a nut and uber-perfectionist who spent loads of money and wanted everything first class.

It may not have been wages per se, but the money being dropped on first class travel arrangements and things like that. And yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if he were promising bonuses or other stuff somewhat off the books. For example, Lambert supposedly had a handshake agreement that he would be offered a 45k/week contract every year as long as he played in half the games. Remember the story that came out where before Saints stayed in a hotel, a Saints cleaning crew would come and clean the rooms and prepare fresh sheets? Stuff like that.

The club probably took a look at the money he was spending on all these things and decided it was overkill and perhaps unsustainable. Thus, they wanted to take certain spending out of Cortese's control. He, being a bit of a prick wasn't happy with that. And I suppose perhaps he was right in some ways-- that first class all the way spirit was part and parcel of his vision.

But when the players began being treated like a mid-table premier league side instead of Galacticos, I could see where suddenly they would feel like promises were broken and suddenly there wasn't anything to keep them here. If you work for a company that always buys you first class tickets and suddenly you are flying coach, you're gonna start to wonder if maybe your employers are cheaping out and if maybe it isn't the a first-class growth company you thought.

 

if it's a little less, we might have got 16m and they got 4m. that would be a 20% cut.

I could see that being a best interests compromise.

Everything is total guesswork though.

i'm guessing because i didn't define it as 16m after their cut?

20m up front from liverpool in total might be wishful thinking but it would give them a lower figure of 16m to obfuscate everything from their side.

I would sit him and his agent down and just say "This is the price. You want out, get someone to pay that fee. Tell any club they bid less the answer is no deal. Over to you guys."

I'd suggest the price be £25m and be done with it. If also go public with this then everyone knows the score.

 

If it's a choice between Marshall and Forster who would you prefer? I'd side with Forster but would be surprised if someone bigger wasn't looking at him.

 

Can't decide between them in terms of quality, so I'll go with the cheaper one.

 

I'm on team Forster.

 

I have a bias towards big scary goalies. forster is the biggest and scariest i've seen lately.
