I think he can definitely improve the things that need to be improved (positioning, decisions, commanding, strength) but it's going to take more than one loan spell; and considering Boruc's age (and unpredictable nature), I think it's likely that we'll be buying a new first-team keeper before Gazzaniga is ready to make the step up. I think he was a cheap, low-risk signing that we needed to make because at the time we only had Davis and needed some depth. He'll improve enough that we could make a considerable profit by selling him, or he could make a good No. 2 if he's unambitious enough to spend a large chunk of his best years on the bench. I think it's highly likely that it'll come to the point where he's not playing and he wants to be playing (much like Bialkowski), so we move him on for a tidy profit.

Yes, selling him on is an obvious way to go if he doesn't mature fast enough or he wants first team action now. What's his age now..? 21ish..? They say a goalkeeper's best years are late 20's to middle 30's, with some going on to become Brad Friedel, so Gazzaniga has plenty of time. The only fly in his particular ointment is that Artur is still only 33, so he'll be around for a number of years yet, and keepers don't make a habit of being injured.

I agree with Joe about Gazza. If things go to plan we'll be a top 6 team and I doubt he'll ever be good enough for that level. If he is going to improve he needs games so he better get a loan move pretty soon.

http://www.maisfutebol.iol.pt/ingla...-premier-league-maisfutebol/1460257-1488.html Jose Fonte wanted by Fener.

Once you have hired Bruno Alves to Zenit, Fenerbahçe is eyeing another central Portuguese. The emblem is interested in turkish José Fonte, of Southampton, found the Maisfutebol . priority of defense is to continue serving the Southampton, a club that is three and a half years, and which is one of the captains, but whether Fenerbahçe forward a formal proposal, and if the values in question convince the player to move to Turkey.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Boruc doesn't keep himself in the best of shape.

It's actually kind of funny. They always show those "Saints in training for xxxxx match" videos on the OS. They always break out the same. You see some kidding around, and then a bit of serious training. At some point there's always a lot shot of Davis in goal, or Davis discussing something with a coach, or Davis doing some bizarre, involved exercise that involves him saving balls with just his head while balanced on a beachball wearing weights or something. You never see Boruc!

Anyway, yeah. I think Gazzaniga is far from a sure thing, but at any rate he seems at least 2-3 years away and unless Cropper can fill the gap it seems like we should have at least one PL-ready or near-PL-ready GK as backup this year and possibly challenge Boruc next year or after that for the #1.

If Fonte leaves we'll be getting Astori or another CB for sure. Maybe then everyone can chill out about Lovren.

You think? I would say Fonte was pretty much bottom of the pecking order during Pochettino's part of the season (other than the invisible Forren), as it stands it's one in one out.

I don't think he was bottom of the pecking order .... he had an injury, kept him out a couple of months, lost match fitness and by the time he was back fit, Hooiveld-Yoshida were forming a strong partnership, before Fonte dislodged Yoshida for the final 3/4 games.

This pre-season will be interesting

Yoshida was injured. I think one thing is for sure though, it's pretty tight between our CBs for places.
