Why are some people saying if we get Wanyama we won't be getting Banega? They aren't even the same type of player.

Don't mind who the big clubs sign (as long as it is not one of our targets)...realistically City, Utd, Chelsea etc will finish above us. More interested in the next tranche of teams who could be ones to keep us in the bottom half.

They do have their differences, but they are both central midfielders mainly. I'd love to have both, but I reckon Poch might think one would be enough. We'd have Wanyama, Schneiderlin and Gaston in the centre, with Cork, Davis and Prowsey getting a decent amount of time as well.

If he says he only wants 2-3 more players, I can't really see two of them being CMs.

Still think it will be more like 3 big signings and maybe a player such as Bueno to add depth.

Depends, he could be planning to use Ramirez out wide more often.

Nigel said at one point that he wanted 2-3 more signings....he didn't get them. I suppose there are players that you want and players that are almost as good, but you definitely don't want to sign any that aren't good enough just to make up the numbers. In that case, we would do better to use a youngster as a back up and let them gain by experience. Nicola will be aware of that as he is trying to do a major clear out of perfectly decent players on high wages who just aren't good enough for us, so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get 2-3 players.

Interesting that Nixon wasn't at the press conference. Perhaps that's why he was being so grumpy.

It is possible that we would be looking to bring in both Wanyama and Banega.

    Based on a 4-2-3-1 formation

Wanyama plays a one of the defensive midfield positions (the double pivot)

Banega can also cover the double pivot role and has a very underated defensive side to his game. He also provides the option of playing in the number '10' position behind the striker, his passing range and vision is second to none. He has the rare ability to be able to dictate a game no matter who the opposition is.

Both players would be great signings but I would be more excited with Banega. He is IMO one of the worlds best playmakers, his vision would take playes like J-Rod and Ramirez to a different level.

I personally don't believe that we'll sign both, on the basis that I would like to think we do want a wide man, and MP has stated 2 or 3 more signings only. Plus, despite being very different players, they are both broadly CMs as far as I am aware.

But yes, despite that, I agree that signing one shouldn't instantly rule us out of signing the other. It's not unthinkable that we would sign both, even if I don't see it.

We could sign both, and then bring in a winger/striker type like a Sturridge (not specifically him, but a forward who can play out wide)

The wide players is a tricky one because the way the formation is set up, the width is supposed to be provided by the full back. Thats why we play a left footed player on the right and right footed player on the left, so they can cut inside and leave space behind them for the fullbacks to run into.

Puncheon plays well with Clyne because he holds the ball and allows Nat to over lap. The same can be said to a lesser extent with Lallana and Shaw. When J-Rod is used wide left he basically just clears out of Shaws way when he has the ball and becomes a second striker.

If we bring in out and out wingers they will only congest the wide postions. A good example of this was in the recent U21 tournement. England played Redmond ahead of Clyne and this just lead to them both getting in each others way, constantly taking up the space the other wanted to exploit.

I would rather we got someone like Banega and moved Ramirez out into a loose right sided position.

If our wide players are Lallana, Rodriguez, Puncheon and Ramirez, then maybe we don't need more. Maybe.

And that is all very for plan A. Indeed, it's a very good plan A. But I would like a pacey, direct winger to give us a plan B, especially when the opposition have a weak fullback who can be easily attacked. Plan A will not always work.

And I'd rather that winger not be De Ridder.

Rodriguez & Ramirez aren't really wide players though are they? I wouldn't consider them as that anyway.
