Very much this. When you've got Rees-Mogg of all ppl slamming it over the "Henry VIII clauses" good luck getting it through the House of Lords.

And even if they do get it through, good luck sacking workers in public sector when you're desperately trying to retain and recruit tens of thousands of staffing shortfalls in every single public sector there is. It's without substance and purely designed to play to the gallery.

 

The salient point being it's debt all but in name. You owe money, until xx amount of time has expired or it is paid back in full. Loans, Mortgages are all forms of debt, but student loans have their own set criteria of repayment, different from normal bank loans.

I think I remember hearing about a situation one time, where someone avoided working some extra hours, because to do so would have meant a repayment kicking in, either that or I just made that up in my head lol.

In 2020-21 there were over 500000 graduates but there are no way near that many jobs paying a large graduate uplift.

My work experience was in the local Water Company in the pumping station, spent all day looking at a load of dials, no thanks

My first job strangely enough was at a different Water Company in the Estimating Dept, spent a lot of time out on site and was trained as a Plumber, I could be called a Plumber because I could wipe a lead joint, plumbers that cant no matter what qualifications they have are merely fitters

It's called student loan in name and it is a debt.

However it's not really a debt, who in their right mind would lend money out with the proviso you wouldn't get it back.

It doesn't go against your credit score. You don't have to pay it back. You only pay extra if and when you earn above a x amount and even then you pay it off super slowly.
