I'm trying to rack my brains and think when the last time we actually had a decent striker and all I can think is the Chopra / Bothroyd partnership! Anyone think of anyone after that who turned out to be decent strikers?
It's been a while since we had anything as exciting and lethal as Bothroyd and Chops. Since DJ went the emphasis switched to goals from all over the park rather than a frontman. The frontmen we've had recently have been quite pathetic. When Malky took us up for the first time we had Heidur Helguson as top scorer that season and he only got 8. The the bulk of the goals that took us up that season came from midfield with Whitts, Gunnar and Noonie. I think Fraizer Campbell scored a few when he came in too. A "20 goal" striker isn't a necessity, but if you haven't got the quality of the likes of Whitts chipping in, then a proven poacher becomes a bloody good option. I doubt we'll spend the money these days though - they tend to be very expensive.
Good strikers but mostly in Div. 1. Not sure how they would have got on in the Championshp. Chopra, Bothroyd and, of course, McCormack were our main men at the higher level with good service from Whitts, Burkie and, for a season, Bellamy.
You could hear the hoof beats pound As they raced across the ground sorry jay I couldn't resist these guys excited me>>>>say fook all masky.
I think with Earnies speed and awareness and Thornes physicality they would have been dynamite in this league right now! Better than what we got earnie would have had those Jack defenders on toast the other week no messing about.
I thought Thorne was overrated. Good League 1 striker thats his level. We paid 1.7m and thats why we ended up in the **** paying over the odds for players.
They were a great pair of strikers. I love watching the fans celebrate the goals - it was a great time to watch the City in those days
Ernie scored 4 times for us in the Championship in 23 appearances. However he bagged 35 plus 3 in the play offs for Forest and 27 for Norwich. Peter Thorne scored 46 for us in 126 appearances including 12 goals in the Championship.
A few older ones come to mind: John Toshack and Brian Clark Tony Evans and Adrian Alston Jeff Hemmerman and Bob Hatton Kevin Bartlett and Jimmy Gilligan Carl Dale and Phil Stant
Leo Fortune West anyone? 23 goals in 92 games for us. 1 in 4. But all Div. 2 and 3. Now he would have suited Warnockball.
Was in the stand at wrexam many moons ago and Leo was on the touchline in front of me. To quote windsor davies. Fine pair of shoulders lovely boy, show them off, show them off.
