Defensively Kelly wipes the floor with Johnson in my opinion.

I wonder whether Carragher might play at RB with Skrtel & Agger in the middle. This would give us 3 centre backs in the team who are capable of winning headers from the corners/throws. I think this would work as long as Etherington doesn't play (didn't he injure his shoulder?) but if he is playing then he may end up making Carragher look a bit silly so Johnson/Kelly would be a better option if they are fit?

I can't see Carroll playing as the Stoke defenders would love to be playing against him rather than the trickery of Suarez. Bellamy might be a good option for his pace and work rate on the wing helping out the fullbacks.

To be honest, if we play Johnson or Kelly...it's either a win-win situation. They both provide different attributes and are equally capable of doing a good job. So whoever plays I will always back the decision and have faith in it.

Yeah definately from defensive positions it'd be no good lumping the ball up to him from distance, Huth and co will lap that up all day but I actually think our service into the box from out wide has been much improved in the first three games and Andys been way too static when balls are being whipped in. I think the understanding between him and the wide men will just improve over time though so I'm not too worried about that.

I don't think there's much in it defensively and Johnson is much better in attack.

No point talking about Kelly when he breaks after every 3 games in the team.

That does worry me, would he have such a problem in the centre of defense? He seems to pick these injuries up when bombing down the flanks, i.e vs West ham and last weekend.

Fair point but then Johnsons had his fair share of injuries as well but tends not to get them mid game like Kelly. It is worrying that though and is why it's a bonus to have Flanagan and Carra who can play there and ease the burden on the other two a bit. Hopefully it'll allow us to keep GJ and MK available for longer stretches and allow them time to fully recover before they are thrown back into action.

That's a good point. So our future CB's could possibly be Kelly and Coates <yikes>

Kelly with his strength and pace and Coates with his aerial ability and monster-like appearance.

I think Robinson is a top prospect. More so than Flanagan.

But he's not getting in ahead of Enrique.

Yeah Robinson does look a bit more cultured but I do think Flanagan will improve and there's certainly no doubting his willingness or confidence for one so young <ok> Ultimately it's just great to have 3 young lads (incl. Kelly) who have already got a number of games under their respective belts and who seem to be passionate and willing to work at their game. Really does bode well for the future.

Oh and as another bonus...Coates is only twenty <ok>

Who knows what the future holds but maybe just maybe in 5 years time we might have a defensive line consisting of pretty much the same players we have now...Agger and Skrtel will be 31, Enrique 30, Kelly 26, Coates 25, Robinson and Flanagan 23. Add to this the likes of Wisdom, Wilson and Sama (all who may or may not develop enough) then I think we have a really solid base to build on now <ok>

    Hi everyone, just joined

Why not Carroll and Suarez together? It worked for the first half against Sunderland, and we only faded because of tiredness from copa, and perhaps because it was the first game. Plus, this time we have bellamy to provide fresh attacking options late on. There is no reason why Carroll and Suarez cant work together and Suarez will create space for Carroll, which will help as he gets to full fitness.

    ----------------Reina---------------
    --Johnson---Carra--Agger---Enrique--
    -------------Lucas--Adam-------------
    -----------Kuyt--Suarez--Downing---------
    -------------------Caroll---------------

this way we also get to keep the flourishing Kuyt, Suarez partenership.

Welcome to the forum mate, and nice name. <ok>

That is a good line up but I think Hendo deserves to start after his last performance. I think an unchanged side to the Bolton game is likely, unless carroll replaces Kuyt.

Maybe just maybe we could have defensive solidity along with keeping the pace and energy of the Kuyt/Suarez combination by having a formation like this
    Carroll.
    Suarez Kuyt.

    Adam Downing
    Lucas.

Reina would desperately want to keep a clean sheet this week after that late goal last week.

    Welcome aboard.

Could see that line up being played, just think they will play in more of a 4-4-2 shape.
