JOEY WARY OF 'WOUNDED ANIMAL'

Joey Barton is not an easy man to please. After a fantastic team performance against Manchester City, many R's fans were basking in the glory of running the world's biggest-spending side so close, before losing out to the odd goal in five.

Not Barton.

After the international break, he and his team-mates are now preparing for this weekend's trip to Stoke, and he told www.qpr.co.uk today: "I couldn't really say it was an enjoyable break.

"Even though we played really well and gave City a real good game, we got beat and took no points from it.

"So it was disappointing from that aspect, but the level of performance was good and there are a lot of positives that we can take from it.

"If we can get anywhere near that level against Stoke tomorrow, we'll be disappointed if we don't take something from the game."

The R's go into the match at the Britannia Stadium in 11th spot, with their hosts one place below them in the Premier League, and Barton added: "The key to survival is beating the teams that you are going to be up against in that battle.

"If you can take points off the teams outside the top five or six, then you've always got a good chance of staying up.

"It's about trying to win the mini-league we are in within the Premier League."

It remains to be seen whether Neil Warmock continues with the same formation that nearly bore fruit against Manchester City a fortnight ago, with Barton playing in the centre alongside Alejandro Faurlin.

For the former Newcastle man, he is ready to operate in whatever role is required of him.

"I am happy to play in whatever position I am needed," he said. "I thought Shaun Derry was very unfortunate to lose his place.

"He hasn't played badly, it was just the change in the formation which has led to him being out of the side, but he works so hard at his game that I am sure it will only be a matter of time before he is back in the team.

"Ale is a really good player, and it makes playing with him so much easier."

The Potters will be looking to end a run of three straight league defeats tomorrow afternoon, including a 5-0 loss at Bolton on their last outing. But the R's Captain is one man who won't be under-estimating the task ahead.

"Stoke is never an easy place to go to," he stressed. "They are a very good side, and very efficient. They have been having a bit of a bad run of late, but I don't know whether that's as a result of an accumulation of playing in Europe.

"They are more of a wounded animal now. Knowing Tony Pulis and the way he sets his teams up, I think they will come out of the tunnel ready to rock.

"They will be more difficult to play on the back of that Bolton defeat. They are not the sort of team to lie down and die, and I can't see any reason why they would start doing that now."

Joey Barton
Is a player i WISH Tony Pulis had signed.. love him or hate him he's a winner. I only HOPE that on Saturday he has a mare of a game. IF we (Stoke) are not up for it I fear another 3pts are down the pan. Should be a great game but, I said that before we played Newcastle and.... <yikes>

Good interview by Joey Barton too! <ok>

Yikes!
Clearly the Simon Stainrod who was with QPR, and who arrived at Stoke were some distance apart.

Aplogies to all Rangers fans who saw SS at his best;I did see him in Heros's Wine Bar in Newcastle Under Lyme quite a lot, which may account for his performances at Stoke.
Having said that two of his six goals (Walsall away and Birmingham away) were pretty good.

My lasting memory of Loftus Road is David Webb scoring an injury time header to beat us 3-2 in 1975 (I think)!

I personally have Sheron marked down (along with a few others) who I would definitely like to meet down a dark alley some day. QPR pretty much risked our entire future on that signing and were repaid by his complete failure to perform at even a Sunday league level. With that the coffers were emptied and we spiraled downwards for a generation culminating in Vauxhall Motors and receivership. Cheers Mike! Cheers Stoke! No grudge here...

He divides opinion on here, I think we were lucky to get him, and he's starting to settle in now.

Maybe the smoking and the drinks meant he was a bit past it when you had him, bit of a legend down here!

Opta Stats: Stoke City v Queens Park Rangers

Stoke have been a constant danger from set pieces this season

With plenty of red cards in this fixture over recent years, expect a fiery encounter between the Potters and Hoops this Saturday
Stoke City have scored a league-high 75% of their goals from set pieces this season.

Tony Pulis' side have the worst shooting accuracy in the top flight, hitting the target with 35% of their attempts, while QPR have the second worst.

The Potters have also posted the lowest number of shots on target (28) and only bottom-placed Wigan (7) have scored fewer goals.

Stoke have won three and lost just one of their last five league matches with QPR.

There has been a red card in each of the last three league meetings between Stoke and QPR.

Heidar Helguson has scored in three of his four Premier League starts this season.

Stoke have won just one of their last seven Premier League matches (W1 D1 L5) and lost the last three in a row.

Stoke have only won six of their 17 Premier League home matches against teams from London.

Stoke have only ever lost back to back home Premier League games on three occasions and each time, one of the two defeats was by a London club.

Only Wigan (6%) have scored with a lower percentage of their shots than QPR (9%).

QPR boss reveals why his side must emulate Stoke - QPR - London 24

Premier League: Stoke City v QPR

Neil Warnock has made no secret of his admiration for Stoke City this season.

QPR travel to the Britannia Stadium on Saturday to face the club which Warnock says has become the blueprint for a promoted team seeking to establish themselves in the Premier League.

Since Tony Pulis and chairman Peter Coates took the Potters up from the Championship in 2007-08, they have finished 12th, 11th and 13th in the top flight, reached the FA Cup final in May and have become a Premier League side of genuine pedigree.

“You look at the teams in the Premier League and the ones that have established themselves have done fantastic really,” said Warnock. “I’ve never respected anybody more than I do him [Pulis] now. Stoke are not only a difficult to side to play against, but they’ve got good players. It’s easy to criticise them but a lot of clubs would like to repeat what they’ve done.”

In previous years, that criticism emanated from Stoke’s relentlessly combative playing style, which ensured that visiting teams were more likely to emerge from the Britannia battered and bruised – and with a considerably lengthened injury list – than with a positive result.

But that same style of play also helped the club turn the Britannia into a true fortress. Their home form has been the bedrock of their three hugely successful campaigns in the top flight.

This season, Coates and Pulis have sought to take City one step further. Playing on the European stage for the first time since the ‘70s thanks to last season’s FA Cup final appearance, Pulis strengthened his squad in the summer by splashing £20 million on Birmingham City’s Cameron Jerome, and Spurs pair Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios.

Talk of a push for the top seven was under-pinned by a stirring start which produced two wins and two draws – including a mightily impressive 1-0 home success over Liverpool.

In recent weeks, however, twin challenges of Premier League and Europa League football have started to take their toll, with City picking up one point from their last six games. Since the win over Liverpool in September, Stoke have lost to Sunderland, Swansea, Arsenal, Newcastle and, in their last match, were hammered 5-0 at Bolton Wanderers.

That was an exact reversal of the scoreline when the two sides met in the FA Cup semi-final last season, and underlines the size of the challenge Pulis and Coates face in turning Stoke from a mid-table side to one capable of going one step further.

“We have become renowned for being resolute and hard to beat, so we are a group of lads who take defeats like that to heart,” said Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham.

Stoke’s response must come against QPR, and their biggest threat is likely to come from striker Jonathan Walters, who has scored five times so far and netted his first goal for Ireland in the 4-0 win over Estonia on Friday night.

Walters’ presence up front with either Crouch or Jerome is likely to give QPR’s rearguard a testing afternoon in what promises to be a familiarly tinderbox atmosphere.

Regardless of their recent poor form, Stoke are unlikely to be drawn into a relegation scrap this season, and can serve a reminder of just why Warnock admires them so much as they condemn Rangers to a 2-1 defeat.

QPR working flat out on set pieces says Warnock

Read More http://www.fulhamchronicle.co.uk/lo...es-says-warnock-64767-29801165/#ixzz1e4eOj1wS

QPR boss Neil Warnock admits his team have been working non-stop on set pieces this week to combat Stoke’s biggest weapon in tomorrow’s clash.

It appears 75 percent of City goals this season have come from dead-ball situations, not least because Rory Delap’s prodigious throws cause mayhem in the opposition box.

But Warnock admits his side will also need a bit of luck to withstand the aerial bombardment for 90 minutes.

He said: “We know what’s coming, and we have to deal with it. But to get away free from there, you need a bit of luck over the course of an entire match, and we hope we get a bit.”

The manager is set to name the same starting XI that did well against Manchester City and continue to exclude Adel Taarabt.

The talented midfielder featured for Morocco this week, but Warnock insists the changes against the league leaders last time out came within an ace of extracting a point at least.

Matt Connolly, Fitz Hall, Keiron Dyer and DJ Campbell are all missing for the trip to the Britannia, otherwise everyone else is fit including midfielder Akos Buzsaky who has overcome an injury problem.

Like I said above.. I HOPE Delap does not even start the game.. If we have both Pennant and Eitherington fit I would play Palacios and Whitehead/Whelan.
I'm sick of saying this but.. Rory is way past his best, I wouldn't even have him on the bench. But for some reason Tony Pulis keeps playing him?

WHEN is T.P. inteviewing for the England job? <laugh> I thought it was a boring game the other night, with T.P. in charge DELAP would be the first name on the England teamsheet, I can NOT remember the last time we scored from a Delap throw in, that's how dangerous they are IMO. Every team is wise to the throws and even as a Stoke fan, they bore me stupid. IF they worked great, fact is they don't anymore and it's anoying many season ticket holders who sit close to me see it week in week out.

IF he plays and it's almost a cert he will start. I'll take bet's on the first Q.P.R. fan on Saturday night to complain about them.

Enjoy the game fellas, but I hope not the result. After which.. GOOD LUCK for the rest of the season. <ok>

Whenever I watch Stoke, I rarely notice Delap during the game until he takes a throw-in.

( I hope this comment dosen't come back to haunt me 24 hours later. )

I'd take a point but I really think we're capable of a win, especially if Pulis doesn't put out what many would consider his strongest side.

Getting out of Stoke alive would be a bonus too.

Any day now; Martin Johnson has resigned:laugh:

you must agree Pottermouth it is unnerving for the opposition when he's launching them into the box, but I wouldn't like it either if the media focus reduced our team's contribution to world football to the Delap factor.

Good luck to you guys too, you're sure to return to winning ways beginning tomorrow week..<ok>

Pottermouth it just seems that you lot have become synonimous with set-pieces,Delap's throw-ins were feared and rightly so for a long time,it just seems more teams have found a way to combat them.I think that Pulis is afraid of changing the system that brought you success, and this is hindering you.In a way it's very similar to what has happened with us and Taarabt, building our team around one player and playing a system to suite his game. However Warnock has realised that in this league you have to adapt and he has done so accordingly,we are starting to reap the benefits as a team even if without Adel we lack that bit of outrageous inspiration.A few more bad results for you and i think you'll see Pulis change his personnel and you might just turn the corner.I am still worried about your se-pieces for this game though as we haven't got the biggest defence!

I like it when I hardly notice Rory, it means he's playing well. If you don't notice a guy who's job it is to sit on the edge of the 'D', tackle and break up play then it's a sign he's doing alright but lately I've noticed Rory quite a lot. He's played poorly of late after a good 4-6 weeks at the start of the season.

I don't know why you're bothering practising against Rory's throws. These days they're about as frightening (to quote Blackadder) as a little rabbit with the word "boo" written next to it.
