ok, so you're pretty close to their valuation. i was quoted between £2m and £3m, and we've got him for free. our other right back cost us £200k - that might give you some kind of perspective of what a good deal it is for us. its difficult not to be biased in your situation to be fair. i've heard fellow norwich fans claim lambert 'isn't all that' which is laughable and no doubt if/when holt goes he'll be dismissed by some fans too and again, it will be nothing more than frustration that he's gone. another of your ex-players, carlos cuellar has just moved to sunderland and yet the villa fans, who clamoured for him to be played more often last season are now dismissing his abilities and claiming he 'wasn't a regular' and 'we got rid of him cos he wasn't good enough'. people are blinkered when they feel hurt. to be honest, all this bickering is neither here nor there anyway. he's a decent signing for us, not spectacular, but steady enough and creates competition for russell martin as well as giving us plenty of cover for various positions. it also saves the club a multi-million pound transfer fee. however, i'm far more excited by the potential signing of jacob butterfield from barnsley...
Honestly mate, im not being biased. Im gutted Naismith and others are bolting. Rangers fans wanted kids at right back infront of Whittaker. One thing Whittaker has got. Is great feet! he can absolutely skin 2-3 players and leave them looking silly. His crossing and defending has been really poor. I would have him at right mid, and he has scored some great goals. IMO he aint a right back. this is us going to uefa cup final.
i'm going to leave it there mate. as i say, i think there are far better right backs out there but you won't find any for free, and certainly not one who will attack as well as he does. we don't have the massive funds of certain premier league clubs, nor the wage structure so we need to shop carefully and cleverly and this is what we've done- signed a £2-3m right back/utility player for free. success for our club next season will be 17th so that we can take a bigger share of the premier league money cake - sad to say it but its our main ambition so we can grow the club to become more established in the top flight. is whittaker good enough to play for a team outside the top 10? yes, i think he is. is he good enough to play for a team competing for european places or champions league football? probably not, but we aren't one of those teams as it stands. its all relative
The only important thing is if Whittaker plays well for us and does what the manager requires of him. Any past played in a totally different league set up matters nothing if he fits into our system.
Agree totally redruth. Players can be almost unrecognisable when playing in different circumstances -- as witness England players playing for England instead of their clubs. If Whittaker is best playing as an attacking right midfielder, he can be plenty useful to us in that position and filling in elsewhere.
Agree also, Wilbraham a MK Dons benchwarmer is perfect example of that, done brilliant for us when callled upon and has now had Premier League experience. If you told that to a MK Dons fan I bet they would have laughed.
as i said above, its not unusual for fans of clubs who are losing a certain player to suddenly underrate them. just watch if holt leaves... all of a sudden he'll be rubbish
Naa I'm going back to site soon which has rubbish internet and then back to the motherland to spend 2 out of 4 weeks in a tent so I'll leave that for someone else!
steve morison got stick off a section of our fans last season, yet he's a good player, as is whittaker. there's all kinds of reasons why players get stick. honestly, i've asked a lot of gers about him as i was doubting myself and i'm pleased to say i shouldn't have done. its not accurate, but roughly 90% positive feedback. the doubts are whether he can cope with the top players like silva and nani, but most full backs struggle against them.
Sounds like someone is a bit peeved and trying to put clubs off signing the free agents he thought were contracted to his newco. Too late me thinks. http://www.teamtalk.com/rangers/7860497/Green-slams-money-driven-stars
Lol at European football. They get knocked out at qualifying stage most seasons! The PL is bettering themselves not financial gains!
can i ask why? he's a good age, good pedigree, good stature, free transfer... hardly a stab in the dark, is it!
It's just a hunch I have - is that ok with you? I'm not saying it's a mistake signing him, I'm not saying he isn't a decent player and of course it's not financially a gamble with him coming on a free, I've just somehow got a feeling that this one might not quite work out. Like I said I hope I'm wrong, and there is every likelihood that with this I am - though I'm not wrong with much else - but the initial feeling I get isn't great. Sorry about that.
