As to Livs point I think it's deliberate on Brendans part to deal with DM last. Call it a cynical attempt to not rock the boat with fans and heap pressure on the replacement or as I would like to see it, a genuine respect and regard for what Gerrard has given to the club and can still give so decided that the DM position wouldn't be resolved to his liking until Gerrard could no longer play enough games in a season to warrant being a first pick. Nothing wrong with that until someone shows me we lost a league purely on Gerrards performances alone and names the better player who declared they wanted to play for us that same year......
If one thing Gerrard has done since Rodgers arrived is to try and implement what the manager has wanted both of him and of the team. Before that he was given licence by both Kenny and Rafa to impose himself in any way he thought fit - can't include Voy because Voy didn't have a clue where anybody was playing!!!. So I can't go along with that analysis. I truly don't buy into the you can't trust him mentality. There's no way that I'm in denial about the time scale that Gerrard has left. I truly don't see him going beyond this season. Therefore it is vital that he spends time with Can on the training pitch and that the pair are allowed to rotate during games.
I think Can is better suited to a CM/Box to Box role, rather than as a DM. He has good pace and drive which allows him to make some great runs. I think we need a specialist DM - William Carvalho is the best DM prospect in world football IMO. Re. Gerrard - everyone knows I'm not his biggest fan. Best way to describe him is that he's a 20th century footballer playing in the 21st century i.e. he's far too aggressive in his thinking to play such a measured role. He doesn't have the discipline to play the short ball, and instead always looks to attack, play the long ball and concede possession. Having said all of that, his passing was woeful on Sunday but his defending was half decent for a change. Lovren was our worst player by far.
I too think this is Gerrard's last full playing season after which he may do a Carra like retirement. Vidal would have been a great replacement but at 27 he's not a long term option. Kroos if Real doesn't work out. Would love it to be a local lad to keep the scouse influence in the team but can't think of any candidates .... Barkley
How old are you? There's absolutely bloody nothing that a 21st Century player can teach a 20th Century player about the game of football - apart from maybe how to fall over. I bet you think sex was only invented after you achieved puberty - that's if you have!!! For goodness sake think.
My apologies Dave, Gerrard is the best deep lying, holding midfielder in the world, ever, in the history of the game.
Jumpers for goalposts eh Dave? Leather caseys, with the weight of a medicine ball, pitches like ploughed fields, centre halves who'd snap you in two..............
I agree that sahko was near disastrous in his passing first half but calmed down in the second. I'd say goal 2 settled a lot of lads though. gerrard was at best average yesterday, many long passes put astray, when further up (rare) got caught on the ball, few bad passes... but in general nothing wrong in terms of base positioning and his shuffling back and forth.
reckon you got the sarcastic response your tirade deserved there dave. for the record you got personal to attack the response, thus frankly I think Jimmy was quite nice back for myself I think 20th century is a wee bit harsh on gerrard as he's played 14 years of the 21st century so he's as archetypal 21st century as they come...
MITO, when it comes to football, the skills remain the same, the speed of thought relative to the pace of the game remains the same. There is not one system that has not been tried before. The whole idea that players today are somehow a whole skill set better than the players that went before is just too silly for words and deserves to be attacked. So as I said, it was personal because I was attacking a mind-set. Now if JS doesn't like that then so be it.
