https://www.football.london/queens-park-rangers-fc/he-rightly-sack-newcastle-expert-14687247 Interesting comments that McClaren's failure at Newcastle was down in part to the fact that he didn't have control of which players were brought in. McClaren/Ferdinand/ Penrice - who decides?
I'd hazard at a guess that the 3 of them would work together to identify the right sort of player at the right price.......
That relationship will be important, and presumably McClaren has confidence in it. Here's a snip from a BBC journalist after McClaren lost his Derby job for the second time - it suggests that McClaren's problems at Derby were similar to those at Newcastle ie control over player purchases: "BBC Radio 5 live's Pat Murphy So the Derby players escape responsibility while the manager who has been at the club five months carries the can. Steve McClaren had an immediate effect last autumn, taking the club out of the bottom four and impressing with his acknowledged coaching skill, but the players shrivelled in the face of promotion expectations. McClaren had set in place a major overhaul of the dressing room this summer, aware that he had been undermined by some malcontents speaking to club owner Mel Morris, a micro-manager who demands success and is not known for his patience - four managers in just over a year testify to that. But it is his club, his £100m-plus investment, and he will run it his way."
It’s an interesting question. LF gets a lot of stick, but he has a tough job and it’s the results that will judge his success, just as it would with a manager. Penrice gets an opportunity and won’t take anywhere as much stick - but it’s his reputation is always on the line as a freelancer, so he needs results too (so far so good as far as we can see). I sense that they will work together on things and will take a sensible (no egos) approach. I don’t know what set-up McLaren worked under in Holland, but I suspect it was similar to us now - so less fear I would hope (and he has walked into the job knowing the set-up). Luckily we are about to see in the coming months.
at middlesbrough he won 4 more than he lost for england he won 4 more than he lost for forest he lost 4 more than he won for newcastle he lost 11 more than he won in his first stint at derby he won 29 more than he lost and in his second stint he won 4 more than he lost other than derby and we all know how that ended its not been a stellar career in england
Yes, the chemistry is going to be important. The impression I get is that for Newcastle and Derby (second time round), he was never completely in the driving seat, due to factors outside his control. He started well at the second role at Derby, and then the team's rise up the league was punctured like a cheese soufle! The team went into freefall. Morris, Derby Chairman said: “Steve is a great coach, we have very talented players and first-class facilities but the heartbeat, commitment, focus and passion has been lacking something fundamental." This time McClaren's coming into a young team that'll look to him, rather than circumvent him to speak to senior management. Leaving aside we haven't got any money to spend, I can see why he thinks he can create a team in his own image this time
I'll reserve judgment. He has my acceptance for now in spite of my doubts. And for a good deal longer than some of his predecessors got. Whether I give him my support will depend on the results on the pitch, the quality of the football played and his eye for talented footballers who are affordable.
This is a results based business first and foremost. I will judge McLaren on results and results alone over the course of this season. I remember reading somewhere on here about playoffs and poor football or mid/low table and exciting football. ( correct me if I'm wrong). I would take the former everyday of the week because the excitement is generated through ambition which in its own right is entertainment. McLaren will surely attract a better standard of player than Holloway ever could. I'm all for this appointment. Wish him the best of luck.
I suppose at the moment expectation is somewhat tempered with a gradual improvement being the order of the day. I'm not sure we still have a "QPR Style" of play, maybe it's a thing of the past with only a few sides playing a way that was entertaining, the 1972 -1976 sides, the side of the early 80's under TV, maybe the 2011 side under Warnock.........other than that it has been fairly mediocre...... However for the first time in ages I get the feeling that we have the makings of a decent side, it may take a couple of seasons for the younger lads to reach their potential and I hope they stay with us. We have IMO one of the best keepers in the division, it's a good job no one else rates him, potentially with the addition of an experienced CB and IF Robinson re-signs a decent back 4, a strong midfield with plenty of options, and some strikers that know how to score, thinking Sylla, Smith elder and younger, Oteh etc then I can see why McClaren is excited by this appointment as he can develope a side that is capable of challenging for Play Offs at least. I just hope that the fans don't turn on him the moment we lose a game........
I'm relatively happy with the appointment. The alternatives (McCarthy, Allardyce, Moyes etc.) don't inspire me much
I'm fairly pleased with this, decent coach with a fairly decent record and on paper better than we've had for quite a few seasons. I was underwhelmed when Ollie came back and did nothing to change my mind, so not sorry to see someone new come in.
It's only the big billy-bollocks managers who have great records anyway - and we're hardly going to attract Mourinho, Ancelloti or Zidane are we. And those managers normally only secure success after spunking several hundred million quid up the wall, which McLaren certainly isn't going to get. I was ambivalent as to whether we stuck or twist with Ollie, and although I'm a bit miffed with the way his departure has been handled by the club (until/if the full story comes out) I'm heartened by what I'm hearing so far. I have a friend who's a scout for the club, and he seems to be full of praise for Schteeve so hopefully he'll bring out the best in our youth players whilst keeping the seniors at their best. No more tombola I hope. Roll on 2018/2019 season and some decent away form as well as turning HQ back into a true fortress - top 10 will for me next year, with a push further up the season after....U Rrrrrrsssss
As he hangs his coat on the hook and settles into the armchair does he think, “yes, another mug club has fallen for it again!”, or “finally, somewhere I can really crack it!”, or “is this where I’ve ended up?” or “dream come true!” or a combination of above? We’ll soon find out, I wish him luck.
