Yes, this is where I am, on his track record. Compare him with Warnock, I know who I'd rather have (and I don't just base this on Warnock achieving promotion this season.). Will he bring real talent to the role or is he another managerial journeyman? I'm sure the fans will get behind him anyway, and it could be an interesting transfer season, though on a modest budget.
I'm not sure about the appointment, I liked Holloway in the fact he seemed to get the never give up attitude of the team right which I just can't see that passion in McLaren. Hopefully as everyone says McLarens tactics and way of playing will remove need for never give up attitude as we will be ahead more than being behind in games. Ultimately being an R there will always be an element of pessimism!!

Chris Martin, Jamie Ward? “Over the next weeks we’ll be linked with everybody, that’s football. “We have time to sit down, time to plan and look ahead.” 11:34 A rebuilding job? “We’ll discuss that over the next weeks. “We discuss targets at the end of preseason.” 11:33 Two-year deal? “Contracts in football now? You don’t know. “If in two years you’re progressing, who knows. “I’m just pleased QPR have given me an opportunity and in two years time I hope to have taken the club forward.” 11:33 A challenge? “They proved they could handle it. “To win consistently you need experience around that youth and that’s something we’ll look to do.” 11:32 Targets? “Targets haven’t been set. “The priority is winning football matches and doing so in a certain style.” 11:32 What excites you most about the job? “The biggest challenge is taking the club forward in it’s recovery. “I was here 4 years ago and it was a good time, but the dressing room needed sorted out. “On the field the squad excites me. “The squad is very good - it’s young, it’s energetic and enthusiastic so I can’t wait to get started.”
Highlights here. Sorry couldn't post it the other way. We’re live from Loftus Road for Steve McClaren’s first press conference as #QPR manager. #WelcomeBackMac Qpr Fc @QPRFC
My takeaways: Focus: taking the club forward, trying to win every game we play, and do so in a particular style. Targets: no target has been set by the owners, but his personal target? Winning the first game. Contracts: length of a managers contract is meaningless in today's game. What do you think about QPR? : always followed the club after being here 5 years ago, there's something about the club, the fans, the stadium and the history of the place, and when the crowd get vocal, it's a very difficult, intimidating place for opponents to come. When here before, the dressing room needed sorting out. The club is now in recovery, things are stable, and ready to move forward. Transfers: no budget conversations yet. He's impressed with the recruitment process over the past couple of years, with some really good young players coming through, and he's looking to carry that on. Getting the right people in is far more important that doing early business. Owners: He's kept close contact with TF, and thinks that with him and Ruben in charge, we've got the right people in place.
Not sure that Steve would be my first choice as manager but it’s probably a case of getting who we can, when we can and that many of the choices I would of made are way over our budget and expectations. I’ll support him as I have with any of our past managers. But I still reserve the right to criticise him if it goes wrong. It could be another interesting season.
Transfers: no budget conversation yet! That's a bit of a concern or BS, surely this was part of conversation when taking the job!
Bit of a daft thing to say then really. He should have just said we have had a conversation and I know the limits but I'm gonna assess squad first.
Yeah agree. Think about it would you take a job without knowing what you had to work with? I think since all this FFP stuff has happened we have been very cautious with what we say and do. He will get funds and they know who they want. Just have to wait and see.
Col is completely right on this He did well at Middlesborough, Derby (1) and even Derby (2) he had a win ratio of 44% His worst period was at Forest (june-oct 2011). I do have a feeling he is a much better coach than manager (where Warnock and probably Ollie you can say the opposite of).....but surely that is what we have been asking for. Last season was all about "our team is better than our results"...if we played this system, if our defense was more disciplined. At this moment I have put it on record that I think Ollie was very badly treated in his dismissal (but I admit Ido not know the real facts, so I could be very wrong about that)....but Steve is now our manager and we really, really could have done a lot worse. I think he could be the answer to our gripes of last season...I really hope so. If he gets to a sniff of the playoffs he will have done well
I'm very much encouraged by the emphasis placed on playing good football as our future depends on it. For reasons not that relevant to the current era, QPR have a reputation for playing the beautiful game and a fan base that expect to see it. You only had to see how our home attendances trickled away after a first half of the season that produced some really dire stuff. By the time the kids had shaken things up in the second half and we were worth watching again it was too late and attendances never recovered. McClaren must know he can't expect much in the way of funds for a promotion push but he has the option of at least delivering entertaining football in order to reestablish the interest of the 30k+ supporters we know are out there somewhere. BTW mods, I agree the earlier new manager strand lapsed into chaos but that's kind of a side effect of your desire to merge all similar topics onto one strand. I particularly dislike the current trend to have everything related to a certain match squeezed into one topic as this includes such disparate things as pre-match analysis and speculation, banter by folks watching live streams and post-game discussions (of particular interest to those of us who actually get to the games). Why not experiment with being a little more hands-off with controlling the topics and see what emerges?
