I thought you meant since we were in the top flight - which is 40 years. Whatever - I agree it is a failure - a PARTICULAR failure given SLs wealth compared to other club owners.
Especially when you stop and think about which (similar size or arguably smaller) teams have tasted the Premiership whilst we have been languishing: Swindon, Oxford, Bradford, Huddersfield, Blackpool, QPR, Watford, Bournemouth, Charlton, Bolton, Palace, Cardiff, Swansea, Barnsley, Hull, Portsmouth, Brentford, Brighton.............
We have astonishingly underachieved and continue to do so.
However, I believe that most of the footballing world still view us as a small club - a footballing backwater, so whereas we fans think we have underachieved I don't think that sentiment is widely held outside BS3.

Football is not socialism. Clubs with less resources have left BCFC behind. Clubs without payments from the EPL can progress. Clubs create strategies to meet the challenges.

A club like Brentford has created a clear strategy, a clear playing identity and culture achieving elevated status. Brentford now in the EPL are looking to alter their development model due to the challenges of Brexit, they can't recruit in the same manner so are altering their model. BCFC in comparison are a mystery.

You are completely missing my point. You keep mentioning BCFC , I’m making a wider point. If you are happy with PP fine, but I think you are in the minority.

You are completely missing my point. You keep mentioning BCFC , I’m making a wider point. If you are happy with PP fine, but I think you are in the minority.

There are also many clubs doing worse, just look at League 1, there are too many to mention. PP gives relegated teams such a big advantage the chance of a non PP club getting promotion is very limited and it will only get worse. This diminishes the whole of the rest of the football pyramid and is why it needs looking at.

There are clubs without parachute payments being promotedc and they are the ones with the joined up ideas. play better prepare better spend better = more chance of promotion. Bristol City have lost ****loads of money to be? it wasnt parachute payments making City be feeble as a team saturday.

City have had money and spent it on shysters and weaklings. identity this identity that five pillars bristol sport chairman signing David James and Mark ****ing Ashton and talking **** identity Johnson = losers. Blaming parachute payments is a losers mentality all day long and season long. That is what city have been.

At the end of the day, financially and from a football success perspective, there are well run and successful football clubs, badly run football clubs that have been successful previously, and then there's us. Reasonably well run but have been totally unsuccessful over the past 45 or so years aside from a few promotions from L1 and a few Mickey Mouse cups.
When you think of it, there are very few clubs of our size that are like us. In fact I'm struggling to think of any right now.

It's not Socialism or Capitalism - it's its own weird form of 'ism'.
If it was Socialism then the whole pot of football money would be shared out down all down the football pyramid and the 'bigger' giants would feel that the 'smaller' clubs were feasting upon their hard work and success.
If it was Capitalism then we would all be left alone to invest whatever money we could get hold of to try and claw our way to the top table - but that isn't the case either with FFP preventing it.
Parachute Payments, whatever we think of them, in the way they are administered today, ensure that the newly-relegated teams have a large financial advantage over the other teams fighting for those 3 promotional places. It doesn't GUARANTEE success, but it makes it a hell of a lot more likely, as a lot of footballing success is down to money.
Just occasionally we see one team break the pattern; Brentford is the current 'anomaly'. They are extremely well-run, invested VERY shrewdly and have done extremely well - congratulations to them, but there was also a fair element of luck involved too, in that the newly relegated teams last season failed to capitalise on their significant financial advantage, allowing Brentford to take one of the promotional places.
Brentford will also receive PP if (when) they get relegated, which will increase the likelihood of them going straight back up again.

I honestly don't know what the answer is - whatever happens is unfair to someone.

What I CAN say is that we will only gain promotion the Brentford way which means that there will ALWAYS be 3 very wealthy ex-premiership teams in the mix to fight against - as well as all the other teams in our own position. It ain't gonna be easy and may never happen.

Brentford were very sharp .. there was a couple of instances of " media type" BCFC connections to players they bought and scored the goals to get them there .. Toney was one .... Watkins ...

There is little weird about it. The EPL generates its income and there is an argument being made that this club should then share its income with its competitors. That would be weird.

Multiple clubs without EPL cash are promoted. These clubs employ differing means. Burnley were not the same as Brentford on or off the pitch.

The answer is planning. Strategy. Something that has been comically poor at Bristol City. Lee Johnson talked a lot and his football changed a lot. Strategy? Planning? It was inconsistent and inefficient.

The B's of Bournemouth, Brentford, Bournemouth playing identity was consistent pre promotion its consistent post promotion, post relegation Bournemouth are approaching the football on the pitch in similar manner leading to continuity of development and recruitment.

Clubs create visions, they set aims and objectives, they go through periods of storming to norming to performing to meet their vision supported by long term culture and philosophies.

Bristol City lurch from vision to culture to identity to new manager to new coaches and it’s a mess of ideas. This has nothing to do with parachute payments, its all to do with the lack of vision and football acumen in the boardroom. Bristol City's chairman is/was the owner’s son, it has boardroom members who know nothing (seriously) about football.

1) Large city or town- Bristol is the 6th or 7th largest city in England
2) Never had Premiership football
3) Catchment area population probably pushing 1 million or more
4) Billionaire owner

As for Brentford.
They also have rich owners. They appointed a series of Managers to progress their quest for a place in the Premiership. They had a plan as to how to achieve it, despite selling their best assets frequently, and it worked.
