The shell grotto is Margate....do you mean the A299, if you go A249 your going the wrong direction mate and will either end up in Maidstone or Sheerness <laugh>

The A299 is the Thanet Way, leads from Whitstable to Margate/Ramsgate etc.

We talking Margate right....the A249 leads from Sheerness to Maidstone.

A299 is Whitstable to Margate main dual carriage way for the coast.

Like I said I've never been. Think it is date 1800's, discovered by accident I think, not sure they even knew it existed. It's not far from the Turner Gallery place or whatever it's called. That end is probably the nicest part of Margate, the front is just a dump. Shame really, lack of investment, could be a gold mine if you got rid of the council and put some intelligent business people in charge.

Depends how old you are or your friend. It was great in it's hey-day, see only fools and horses for a bit of nostalgia, but lack of investment and failure to change when ppl started travelling further a field was the death of it. Add to that the old DHSS used to fill the lodgings with benefit ppl as they did in most coastal places, it just killed it.

If you go to see the shell grotto, you might as well do the Turner Contemporary at the same time. Park up in the Railway Station car park, walk down along the front to the other end and your be where you need to be.

Personally I wouldn't bother but if you are you might as well visit Joss Bay and a few others that slip my memory, much nicer and quieter locations.
