Really sad news guys, Stan was a great player and a great character. He along with the likes of Best and Worthington were players that brought so much glamour and skill to the game back then. Co-incidently one of our all time greats Duncan Forbes is suffering from a similar condition and has done for some time a real bastard of a disease.
Very sad news. Stan defined what being an R is. Such a character, very proud he was a Ranger. Terrible disease, all the best to Stan and his loved ones. To quote the late great Brian Clough on the game plan to beat QPR: "Stop Stan Bowles".
like everyone of a certain age when i played football in the garden or park with my mates i was always Stan Bowles, I thought rather foolishly I could do his tricks and dribble and play just like the great man. how wrong I was, there is only one Stan Bowles.
My all time QPR legend, without any doubt. A true talent with the ball and everything a fan could want in a player. My memories of his games, his antics, his 'live life to the full' attitude and being star struck the few times I met him will always bring a smile to my face. An incredible, incredible player. It is so sad to hear he has contracted this awful disease, and my heart goes out to his family. So very sad.
After probably the two toughest weeks I have had personally, this is not something I wanted to find out. My hero when I was growing up, the player I always tried to be when playing football in the park. On Thursday, my partners nan was buried - she too had dementia. As she does not get on with her own mother (and I did not know how deep the wounds are), I found out that although she told me her nan brought her up, just how much both did for each other. It was particularly sad as the week before, the three evenings we saw her we did not realise just how close to the end she was. Her nan, although not my immediate blood family has left a mark and I am still grieving for her and my partner, her grand-daughter right now. I hope that Stan receives all the help and support available.
Ninj... I am so sorry to hear about your partners nan. It is a truely terrible disease that sucks the life out of the people left behind. I do hope you can gets your partner to remember her nan as she was before she was affected.....as we also should remember Stan in his pomp and pride. Best wishes to you all ninj...stay strong
Terrible illness, just hope Stan gets all the help he deserves.A true giant of our game, and undoubtedly the greatest hoops player ever!Sorry to hear your news Ninj, all the best for the future.
Awful disease whether it be an R's legend or one of our own family. My heart goes out to all that are affected by it.
What a player, loved watching Stan (only on the tele unfortunately) and his autobiography is one of the best I have read great stories of a great man. So sad to hear this latest news, my very best wishes to Stan and all his family
Stan Bowles, one of the main reasons that made QPR 'different', like most on here one of my idols, sorry to hear about his condition. I hope both he and his family receive the respect they request.
Very sad news. I recall thinking at the time that he was a bit distant when he was interviewed on the pitch at the Millwall match last April.
I will always remember Stan as part of the best QPR side ever that should have won the title in 75-76
Shush, now Col will be fuming about Norwich again! Seriously though, a terrible disease and I wish him well. I was a huge fan of Stan's back in the early seventies. A time when there weren't forums such as these, and you could merrily admire players from different teams who caught your eye with no fear of admonishment. A true character, an individual genius. They don't come around too often.
I'd forgotten about that dreaded 3-2 defeat! Your sentiments are spot on, not something you'd wish on anyone.
In 1972 I loved football but had no real reason to support QPR as lived about 35 miles away but quite simply Stan was the reason I started supporting Rangers and he was my hero throughout and I hardly missed a game for years. I have him to thank for the rollercoaster journey of QPR which parallels with his own life.
Stan's an absolute Ranger's legend, performances on the pitch was one of my boyhood reasons on supporting little 'ol QPR
