I couldn't remember if the Hammers were in that 'all ticket' category, but yep I think they were. West Ham > Spurs
I went to the FA Cup 1/4 final v West Ham in 1975 and I'm sure I paid at the gate.I'm sure as the capacity of Highbury got smaller all ticket games got more regular.I remember going to the League Cup semi final 2nd leg v Liverpool in 1978 and that was all ticket
You used to be able to pay on the gate at Upton Park for Arsenal when we played away there in the 80's
I can't remember many all ticket games before the North bank was re-developed post Hillsboro (and capacity reduced), but I do remember one opening game of the season at home to Liverpool when there were so many inside the ground people climbed up the stansions to watch the game, some even got up right up to the roof and sat up there all afternoon ! I think the club had a re-think after that and probably made more games all-ticket. That said, our title winning season of 88-89 we only averaged about 35k even though our capacity would have been close to 57k, there was a dip in attendances when all-ticket was announced so perhaps it was around this time...
The capacity of the grounds pre all seater was a fluid figure though. I remember being at Highbury and most games then were around 35k attendance, but I also remember the big games being closer to 50k. I stood on the North Bank for a game against Liverpool and the attendance was 52k but believe me that was not a comfortable experience and the ground was for all intent beyond capacity.
I think all ticket games became more frequent as the capacity of Highbury was reduced,as I said earlier I went to the FA Cup 1/4 final v West Ham in 1975 and it wasn't all ticket, if my memory serves me correctly the attendance that day was about 57,000 When I first started going to Highbury the capacity was 63,000.
As Krome has just pointed out. A win against Newcastle tonight will see us celebrate St Totteringham's day.
Those spud mods are easily offended. But given that they tolerate HIAG making them look like idiots every day, you'd think a little bit of light hearted banter about St Tots day would have been a welcome distraction.
Is it? I got that from http://www.ashburtongrove.co.uk/201...n=Feed: AshburtonGrove (AshburtonGrove.co.uk), bah!
