It's not all Scottish Kempton(Who hate the English).Strange situation, but you'll find that most people who don't want independence don't have issues with the English. And the majority of those who want independence are Catholic...Or Aberdonian sheep shaggers. Strange I know but the deep rooted dislike for England is in evidence at Parkhead of a Saturday but quite the opposite at Ibrox and that seems to bear out in the general public.Pure and simple,it basically boils down to religion.
There are But not from anyone that matters I just think if people want to celebrate it they should get on and celebrate it. Not this occasion maybe but some people seem to just use a few noisy SM posts as an excuse not to actually arrange anything (and you can easily find someone offended about anything in there) Arrange the party is what I say
I agree, and do tend to celebrate the day, however you do have to be aware and ready for the criticisms, as I know of several that tried, and some that wanted a wider celebration, including dressing as St George in a pub crawl, akin to the green hats on St Guinness Day, and they received a very strong push back from the Police and Authorities.
Really? Genuinely didn’t know that. I can’t see why they’d push back at all. I’d support it, or a wider celebration. If people want to celebrate it they should do and when it is shown to be ok that would normalise it. Obviously Guineas heavily support SPD paraphernalia as they’re the most obvious drink...so they make a fortune. Unlikely that would happen for SGD as there’s no single obvious drink to piggy back on
Most people would support such festivities, but they are viewed by Authorities and the media as nationalistic and xenophobic, so there is a strong, albeit often subtle, push back. You only need to view the responses such things get on forums to get an idea of some of the peculiar hypocrisy, bigotry and prejudice that get's applied. Some of the drinks that could have been used, have been pushed to change their name due to similar cockeyed logic.
There's been a few over recent times. Marston's have dropped all reference to 'English' including St George from their Bombardier range.
Here you go, before and after. Lots of complaints from landlords apparently (as in pub landlords, not Tim Taylors...)
Bizarre I'd hope landlords have complained about the new branding...because its ****. When it comes to private companies the only real way to tackle it is through capitalism. If people care enough they should write to them complaining, and then simply stop buying their products. Still can't see what the 'Authorities' would practically do to stop a SGD event happening.
And yet, it has happened. It often gets labelled as being for other reasons, much as the flags issue, where people are keen to repeat claims it was about planning not nationalism etc., but there is a resistance from the media and Authorities towards celebrations of St George or local culture and tradition for fear of 'upsetting' some ill-defined groups. Try it, hopefully you'll show things have changed, or I'm just wrong, and we can wear daft hats and get drunk round town for St George next month.
I would argue as many English hate the Scottish as vice versa. And both are a minority. Quite frankly, with the history of the various countries within the UK and Ireland, I'm amazed those places don't utterly despise us.
I won't be organising an event myself as I have other family things on every SGD. I hope someone does though, and that it goes ahead without any negative things happening I'll get pissed round town with you in a daft hat any time though!
Recent polls suggest that anywhere between 52-55% North of the border would vote for independence. That suggests to me that it's a majority of Scots that wish to break up the union? Of course, after recent revelations regarding the SNP and the fact that polls can change and people have been known to bottle it come the day, there still remain a significant amount of Scots who want nothing to do with England. For what reason I'm not sure because in my eyes Scotland could not survive without significant support from Westminster(the vast majority of Scots still cling on to the North Sea oil industry revenue which will Peter out in the not too distant future).
So are you suggesting everyone who wants independence hates England? If I said everyone who wanted Brexit hates Europe I'd probably get abuse. There's a difference between 'not wanting anything to do with you' and 'hating you'. I'm not going any further because of politics. Though, nowadays on here, certain politics are allowed depending on which mod is around...
Yes,I understand that but I still wouldn't wish her a mandate to find out.Pollsters are a fickle lot and it's votes on the day that truly matter. She(Sturgeon) would whip it up into a frenzy and I wouldn't like to call it.
Without going into politics, which I'm not.I live up here in amongst it and base my assumptions on what I see, hear and have heard for a long time.
I filled out my census form yesterday, it asked me what my identity was, British, English, Scottish, Welsh, NI, so I had a choice between British and English, I put English.
