Squad strength

Two kinds of strength on display yesterday and both equally pleasing.

The first was how just how mean and lean all eleven looked. I remember a great deal being made of pre-season under WGS but this one looks to have been even more effective. Everyone looked properly sharp and levels were maintained for the whole 90.

The second was the bench. Isn't it great to be able to bring on three players who many would argue should have been in the starting eleven.

I am very, very impressed.

They all looked honed. Adam has never been fat but he now has cheekbones you could shave with! We have a squad that Adkins will find hard to keep happy with only 5 subs allowed. Will need his man management skills. However, with Barnard injured we didn't have an out and out striker on bench. We will have to rely on attacking midfielders. Appears we have a team strong in depth, but what will it be like by February with a few injured players, especially if we lose Chamberlain.

There is so much strength in depth in our midfield that we will probably have 2 or 3 midfielders on the bench most games, with the ability to switch tactics or even cover defence in event of an injury when Cork could drop back.

Another thing that really shows the strength in depth is showing who actually didnt make the bench. For example Barnard, Forte, Holmes, Dickson, Seabourne and chamberlain all of these players were usually in and around the bench and first team, obviously it is different now that there is only 5 subs allowed but we really do seem to have strength in depth.
