Vdv talks about Van Gaal http://tottenhamhotspur.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/van-der-vaart-i-miss-spurs.html And also admits he misses his time here VDV. Magic player!
Okay, is van Gaal comes in and his first order of business is to bring VDV back, will anyone miss Sherwood that much?
I couldn't care if Mickey Mouse is the manager ( Oh, wait a minute we've done that one recently, haven't we!) I just want to win something again, after all these years!...
Your first few sentences sound like a description of AVB. I think where Mourinho excels is with his circle the wagons, us against the world mentality.
http://talksport.com/football/van-d...d-be-excited-spectacular-van-gaal-14022481136 A Dutch football expert speaking about Van Gaal, and what we can expect, should he join. Worth a listen. The fact that he likes to work with youth and doesn't feel the need to spend money will be music to Levy's ears!!
As exciting as it is to be linked with van Gaal, some part of me feels we won't get him. All just seems too good to be true.
How many really, really good managers are out there? I mean men who, in any club, could get more out of the players than their natural ability would suggest? The jobs managers get, the reasons they're hired, the reasons they're fired - there just seems to be a hell of a lot of randomness. Also sometimes managers and clubs just seem to fit and a manager successful at one club will just not be able to replicate it elsewhere. (If, indeed there was an "it" to begin with and "it" wasn't just luck). Connected with this is the aura (that's got nothing to do with their management skills) that a manager like Fergie or Wenger must have at a club for any player joining or coming up through the ranks. Fergie got a lot out of some average players in his time but, by the latter half of his reign, was one of his key assets simply being Fergie? Imagine the authority he had there over every single member of staff - that's got to give you a bit extra. Since I mentioned managers and clubs just "fitting" I did get the impression that we had that a bit with Harry. But, having said that, we also had some damn fine players at that time too. Frankly I can't see that Sherwood or AVB can be such terrible coaches that actually our Magnificent Seven would be pulling up trees if only they were managed better. What's been Sherwood's main master-stroke so far? Start playing our best striker. Oh look - better quality player on the pitch, better results. Fancy that. Our players are not as good as the players of at least five other teams in the Prem right now. So Van Gaal or anyone will be doing a bloody good job to get us top four. Van Gaal has managed Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich. Guess what? He managed, against all odds, to get those minnows some silverwear! I mean - is that any indication as to what he would do with a team with one of the lowest net transfer spends in the league and about the 6th, 7th highest wage bill? I would have no particular reason to think that Van Gaal would do any better than Sherwood is currently doing. Hate to say it but there's only one manager who springs to mind who seems able to genuinely add value to his club and consistently build good sides and spot excellent talent despite always having his best players poached - Arsene Wenger. Having said that I bet he'd **** up the minute he got to Spurs!
Spurs turn good managers/players crap. Its a cycle that keeps repeating. It makes me think something is rotten in the club and part of me is beginning to think its Levy, despite the good financial job he's done.
Why would any top current manager take the Spurs job. It would be a death wish and ruin their illustrious career. They have not the funds to compete and working with a nutter like Levy will always end in tears. He wont come to Spurs in a million years, somebody will come in and offer him a chance of success , which we can't.
I don't get this logic at all. There is only any point in signing a player if the amount you spend on him is less than the value he brings to the club. If you get this right then his value will inevitably increase. Similarly you should always sell a player if the price you can get for him is higher than the value he brings to the club. This is nothing to do with footballers being commodities it is simply the facts of life in any professional sport. Money is a resource that has to be used wisely - wasting it is a disaster. If you can identify a player who is better than one of yours that you can acquire for a decent price then you should buy them and sell the current one. And why does it matter if the DoF makes the decisions on this? The only target is to improve the squad as that is the only way to win more trophies and increase the value of the club. Why would anyone think that the person best able to coach the squad to perform better is likely to be the best person to see which players could improve the squad. they are different skills and rightly split between different roles. There is no contradiction at all between aiming for success on the field and improvement in the club's value.
Naturally, a silk purse cannot be made from a sow's ear, to quote an old proverb. However, there is something in the argument that a top manager will get the most of the resources at his disposal. All I have heard seems to suggest that is what Van Gaal is best at. To be a world class manager nowadays, you need to be a talent spotter, master tactician, amateur psychologist, headmaster, wet nurse, all rolled into one.
****ing hell Spurmey, you trying to win the "most Negative" award this season?! In all seriousness, I agree with you. lenny, I get what you're saying, but VanGaal's stats are very good. He's managed all over the place and has an excellent win % everywhere he's been. Ajax ('91-97) - 68% Barca - ('97-00) - 56% Holland - ('00-02) - 53% Barcelona - ('02-03) - 53% AZ Alkmaar - ('05-09) - 58% - (A club who'd won **** all, and team of youths who he guided to glory and CL qualification, as you said.) Bayern Munich - ('09-11) - 61% Netherlands -('12 - Present - 61% All we can do is take his record and hope that continues for us. What more do we have to go on? We have to make some sort of a decision.
Lol, Spurs have been chipping away at me all season Tim Sherwood - 54% (7/13) with a club who've won **** all So he has a better record with Spurs, in his first job, than Van Gaal had managing Barcelona. Hands up who loves stats!
