A troubled poet, hopeless romantic and genius...as well as a scumbag, maggot and cheap, lousy ***got. He sang this, after which my youngest is named... ...and wrote and recorded so much that speaks to me as loudly as anything. His writing snd recordings will live forever. Some people are born to live in a manner that most don't understand.
One of the songs that bizarrely slipped through the censorship net for years. Up there with Greased Lightnin', which still ends up on TV in the afternoon, for some reason.
MacGowan himself backtracked on its usage but it was never a major problem for me. It'd be like removing other far more derogatory terms from dramas about gay lives before things changed for the better. The song's set in an unspecified time in the past, when the 2 protagonists were young and life had yet to revealed its disappointments to them. It's a historical piece and stand on that basis...if you want it to...or junk it if you'd rather. It's a terrible shame that a work of such genius is increasingly notable for a discussion that serves very little useful purpose. Madonna's 'Like a Prayer' is overtly about fellatio, but that's ok (I'm pleased it is ok) but this isn't? Pull the other one, it's got jingle bells on it.
A phenomenal live act. For me, they came along at the perfect time to replace The Clash as a band. They are definitely somewhere in my Top 10 of bands...probably very near the top... ...Now I'm drifting into Hi Fidelity territory.
The National Kilburn HR mid 80s , could be late 86 , the place was packed and the wall in there were wet they were on great form and Shane was on good form ,when the gig finished we made our way back to Kilburn HR only to find no trains ,had to walk to Queens park in the freezing rain only to find that no underground trains running due to weather, found out the overground trains were now running out of Kensal green ,eventually got home at 3.00 and up for work at 5.30 , now if it happened I would get an uber
I was there that night. My grandparents live in Kensal Rise. I stayed at their place... In my head, it was '86...but if it was 87, I wouldn't be surprised. I met Mrs B when FONY was number 2 in the charts. It's very much our song and The Pogues are a part of our lives. The first song my eldest daughter sang along to was their version of Dirty Old Town..."Tooown". The night before my brother died, the other 3 brothers were at my place, drinking heavily and listening to The Clash and The Pogues.
Oh yeah, baby. We got a tip a couple of months ago that it was happening. BRING IT ON!!!!! It's gonna cost me a fortune....
