It would have been John Peel's birthday today , I will raise a glass of red to the man who had such an influence on my musical taste , RIP sir
Going through my vinyl last night I found this album , brought back memories of traveling around the States after I had finished my apprentiship , spent nearly a year out there until they found out my visa had run out and was " asked" to leave
Johnny Cash did Hurt as his farewell song , You Want It Darker was Leonard Cohen's goodbye, Trump tried to use Hallelujah as one of his inaugural songs but Cohen's family refused and told him he could have this instead , hats off to the family
We have lost the great Toots Hibbert , so many great tracks to choose from but I will put this up because it was one of the first singles I brought, got it from a grocery shop in market street Watford that sold yams, coconut and Reggae singles , RIP Toots
The story that is seldom told. The truth that can't be bought or sold From east to west, and hot to cold, Revival pressure, I will never grow old. Well, at least all the listeners of community radio stations know what tracks are going to be played all day tomorrow.
Used to catch these guys busking around shopping centres and the pubs and clubs in the SE, this was their song that made the top thirty about 15 years ago , shame they never got the credit they deserved, the brothers broke up about 2010
I've been listening to a lot of Toots and the Maytals the last few days. Truly one of the greats. His music always makes me happy. My first encounter with reggae was in a bar in Roadtown, Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands. I was a kid and got there before all the other tourists, and for whatever reason the fabulous people who worked at the bar gave me drinks, tried to teach me to dance, and did teach me appreciation of Toots and the Maytals and Jimmy Cliff.
A Willei Nelson version of a very apt song for America right now it should also be remembered that the original by Paul Simon was recorded in a studio on Willesden High road
